The end of This Is Us season three is nearly upon us and the finale preview provides a lot to unpack. Yes, flash-forwards and flashbacks are essential to the unique storytelling of the Dan Fogelman–created show, but it appears he really upped the ante this time. Not only does the season three finale preview tease another plot point in the “her” mystery, but it also shows Rebecca (Mandy Moore) getting into a car accident when the Big Three arestory 11 years old. So, are these two events tied together?
Our gut tells us yes, but Fogelman also spoke to the issue during PaleyFest this past weekend. In addition to promising fans will “get a lot of answers” about Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) marriage, Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Zoe’s (Melanie Liburd) relationship and Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) premature child, Fogelman shed light on that flash-forward scene.
The 43-year-old writer explained the scene will “be a big part” of the season finale. And since the Rebecca car crash scene seems somewhat out of the blue, our guess is that the “her” scene will transpire in the wake of her experiencing a larger car crash.
Fogelman went on to say, “We have all of our story lines building to that in the last episode. It’s kind of gigantic. The last five minutes of the episode are sprawling.”
So what happens after we find out what the “her” situation is and what’s going on with the Pearsons? Hartley gave a short but sweet synopsis of season four of the series, saying, “Everyone is not OK.”
What could this mean for Rebecca’s health, Beth and Randall’s happiness, Kevin and Zoe’s future and Kate and Toby’s baby Jack? We have so many questions and something tells us the season three finale won’t answer all of them.
The This Is Us season three finale airs on NBC next Tuesday, April 2, at 9 p.m. PT/ET. Brace yourself.
