Sandra Oh Gives Impassioned Speech at Stop Asian Hate Rally: ‘I Am Proud to Be Asian! I Belong Here!’

Sandra Oh offered a powerful statement this weekend asking for support for the Asian community in the wake of the Atlanta shootings.

The Killing Eve star made a surprise appearance at a Stop Asian Hate rally in Oakland, right outside of downtown Pittsburgh. Oh addressed the group of attendees with an impassioned speech about the Asian-American experience and a spurring request to maintain community and help Asian folks in need.

In the video, Oh begins, "Hi, my name is Sandra Oh. Pittsburgh, I am so happy and proud to be here with you. Thank you to all the organizers for organizing this. Just to give us an opportunity to be together and stand together and feel each other."

She continues by saying, "For many of us in our communities, this is the first time we are even able to voice our fear and our anger, and I really am so grateful to everyone willing to listen...One thing that I know: many in our community are very scared, and I understand that. And one way to go through and get through our fear is to reach out to our communities."

Oh then asks the crowd, "If you see something, will you help me? If you see one of our sisters and brothers in need, will you help us? So we must understand, as Asian-Americans, we just need to reach out our hand to our sisters and brothers and say, 'Help me and I'm here.'"

To close, Oh led the crowd in a chant of "I am proud to be Asian! I belong here!" She then said, "Many of us don't get that chance to be able to say that, so I just wanted to give us an opportunity to be able to shout that. Thank you so much."

The rally, as well as Oh's speech, was in response to the Atlanta shootings that took place last week, where eight people lost their lives. This tragedy was the latest instance in an increasing trend of violence against the Asian community. Other celebrities, like Lana Condor, have been using their platforms to speak out against the violence and to call attention to these issues.

Such a powerful and important message.
