When it comes to red carpet fashion at the Academy Awards, we typically look to the women—not the men—for setting the biggest new-to-us trends. That’s why we have to hand it to Ryan Seacrest for introducing us to something we’ve never seen before in men’s footwear: Shoe cumberbunds.
In fact, his Live with Ryan and Kelly co-host Kelly Ripa was the first to call him out about what exactly was on his feet. During the E! Live from the Red Carpet pre-show ahead of the Oscars broadcast, Ripa walked the red carpet with her husband Mark Consuelos and had to ask Seacrest: “Is that a cumberbund?” as she gestured toward his shoes.
Seacrest confirmed they were—and Ripa went on, joking: “That’s how you know you’re rich, when you have cumberbunds on your shoes.”
LOL, Ripa...but for real. That’s some fancy footwear.
Still, we’re kind of digging the twist on the formal loafer. If it’s good enough for Seacrest, it’s good enough for us.
