Royal News Roundup: Holiday Photos, Rule-Breaks & Borrowed Earrings

Here, all the royal news you need to know for the week of December 16, 2021.

  • Prince William and Kate Middleton released a brand-new family portrait on Instagram, which will be featured on their Christmas card this year. The photo (which was taken during a trip to Jordan) included the couple’s three children: Prince George (8), Princess Charlotte (6) and Prince Louis (3).
  • In the pic, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge broke royal protocol by showing PDA, which is typically frowned upon by members of the royal family. While William is resting his hand on his wife’s knee, Middleton is reaching over his arm and doing the same.
  • It didn’t take long for fans to notice that George and Louis are looking more like their dad by the day. At first glance, they don’t look very much alike. But if you compare the photo to old pics of Prince William, you’ll notice the resemblance.
  • The same goes for Princess Charlotte, who resembles several members of the royal family. This includes Prince William, Queen Elizabeth and Lady Kitty Spencer.
  • Queen Elizabeth penned another rare statement, where she congratulated the HMS Queen Elizabeth for returning from its seven-month deployment. She concluded the note with a personal sign-off: “Elizabeth R.”
  • The 95-year-old monarch is set to break a longstanding tradition. Instead of holding her annual family Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace, she has reportedly canceled the occasion altogether.
  • Sarah Ferguson made a rare statement about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship during an appearance on the Italian talk show, Porta a Porta. She said, “The most important thing—and I know Diana, if she were here, would say that—is they are happy. And she makes him happy.”
  • New details about Prince Philip’s will have emerged. According to People, the document is reportedly stored inside a secret safe at The Royal Courts of Justice in London. It’s kept alongside royal wills dating back to 1911, including those of the Queen Mother, Lord Louis Mountbatten, Princess Margaret, King Edward VIII and 27 others.
  • Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, shared a never-before-seen glimpse of their holiday card. On one side, there’s a message that reads, “Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year.” On the other side, there’s a candid photo of Prince Charles fixing Bowles’s mask.
  • Last week, Middleton hosted a Christmas concert at Westminster Abbey. The duchess looked festive in an all-red ensemble from Catherine Walker and accessorized with a pair of sapphire and diamond fringe earrings, which she reportedly borrowed from Queen Elizabeth.
  • During the event, the Duchess of Cambridge performed her clever parenting trick. While speaking with a young boy who was seated at the event, Middleton leaned down to meet his eye level. The move reduces dominance over kids and encourages them to communicate openly and freely using direct eye contact.
