Queen Elizabeth has plenty of reasons to celebrate today. Aside from her historic Platinum Jubilee, the matriarch is also marking another special occasion. And this one involves her namesake great-granddaughter, Lilibet.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's little girl turned one today, and the queen wasted no time in sharing her well wishes for Lili. On her official Twitter account, the royal included a balloon emoji and wrote, "Wishing Lilibet a very Happy 1st Birthday!"
Other members of the royal family also joined in to celebrate the occasion on Twitter, including Lili's aunt and uncle, Kate Middleton and Prince William, and Prince Charles and Camilla Bowles.
The queen's birthday message comes only a day after reports of the monarch finally getting to meet Lilibet for the first time. According to royal expert Omid Scobie, who co-authored Prince Harry and Markle’s biography, Finding Freedom, the queen secretly met with Lili after Trooping the Colour.
Per Daily Mail, he told BBC, “Those moments with Lilibet are very much private between them and the queen. And of course, we know how much she’s been looking forward to it.”
He continued, “We know the queen went back to Windsor Castle yesterday. The couple went back to Windsor as well, where they’re staying at Frogmore Cottage. So, that would have been the first moment or the first chance for her to meet her namesake.”
As for Markle and Prince Harry's birthday plans for Lili, it's very unlikely that they will have a public celebration. Scobie explained, “I think people are expecting some sort of big birthday extravagant event, that we’re going to see photographs from. From what I’m told, we shouldn’t expect anything.”
So it appears that there won't be any public sightings of the birthday girl this weekend. Still, it seems like both Lili and the queen are ringing in these milestone occasions with a bang.
