They have a point

When it comes to the ongoing tension between Prince Harry and the rest of the royal family, everyone seems to have an opinion and now, a royal from across the Channel is chiming in with her own surprisingly heartfelt take. Princess Delphine of Belgium, who knows a thing or two about complicated royal dynamics herself, opened up about Harry on a recent episode of the It’s Reigning Men podcast. And she didn’t hold back.

“I understand the guy, he’s just traumatized,” she said. “He’s doing these things and everyone is bullying him, but not thinking about his trauma and I just find it terrible because I feel like he’s been kind of left.”

Delphine, 57, isn’t just speaking from the sidelines. She spent years fighting for recognition as the daughter of King Albert II, after being born from an extramarital affair. She knows what it feels like to be on the outskirts of royal life, which might explain why she feels such empathy for Harry.

She pointed to the 1997 death of Princess Diana as a major, lingering trauma for Harry. “She had these children and the death was just horrible,” Delphine shared. “Especially seeing these two children, left by a really natural, nice, normal motherly woman. So they lost such an important figure and I feel very sorry for Harry because I think that was traumatic for him.”

Delphine also connected Harry’s legal fight for royal security to the loss of his mother. “It’s to do with what happened to his mother,” she said, suggesting that the fear and pain from that time never really left him.

And while some dismiss Harry’s concerns by saying he’s an adult now, Delphine pushed back. “You’re never a grown-up. You’re still the child even if you’re 70 and you still have your parents, you’re still the child.”

She admits she doesn’t follow royal drama all that closely but when it comes to William and Harry, she feels “very protective” of them. “I feel like I grew up with them,” she said.
