In a move that feels rather major, senior aides from Prince Harry and King Charles’s teams were pictured meeting in London last week—a potential sign of progress in a royal family rift that has felt impossible to heal.

The Mail on Sunday was the first to break the story, revealing that Meredith Maines, the Duke of Sussex’s chief of staff and communications director, flew in from Montecito and was pictured meeting with Tobyn Andreae, King Charles’s communications secretary on July 9. Per the publication, it is the “strongest sign yet of the determination on both sides to resolve the bitter House of Windsor feud.”

Of course, this meeting comes in the wake of Harry’s headline-making BBC interview, which followed a major court loss in his quest for automatic taxpayer-funded police protection. This past May, the Duke of Sussex opened up about the true state of his relationship with his father and his desire to reconcile. “There’s no point continuing to fight anymore,” he said. “Life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has. He won’t speak to me because of this security stuff. But it would be nice to reconcile.”

Details of the London-based meeting, which was held at Royal Over-Seas League, a three-minute walk from Clarence House—the king’s residence—were sparse. There was no formal agenda, just casual drinks, per the source. Both sides wanted to have their perspectives heard. While the meeting was meant to be secret, the trio was pictured seated briefly on the club’s outdoor garden terrace.

Potential progress? Perhaps. There’s a long road ahead, the source revealed, but said that it’s a step in the right direction. “Everyone just wants to move on and move forward now. It was finally the right time for the two sides to talk,” per The Mail on Sunday. (It was also revealed that Maines’s involvement wasn’t a special trip, but rather part of her routine duties, such as connecting with media contacts and Harry’s patronages, in the U.K., according to People.)

Baby steps, but from our point of view, we’re hopeful there’s more conversations to come.
