Mainly, what it was like being away from her kids

Pop the As Ever rosé: Season two of Meghan Markle’s Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, is here. But alongside batches of fresh recipes, a lineup of star-studded guests and a runway showcasing her epic style, Meghan punctuates the second installment of the series with plenty of royal tidbits, too. One of her biggest reveals? How it felt to be away from her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, during Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.

The vulnerable moment occurs during a chat with Queer Eye star Tan France in episode 3. When France—who is also a dad—asks Meghan about the ups and downs of parenthood, Meghan replies: “It’s better than I ever expected.” France continues, describing his own perspective: “You know what’s funny? When parents are like, ‘Oh, I just can’t wait for them to go to college and be out,’ I’m like, I never want my children to leave. They’re not allowed to get married. Not allowed to leave my house,” he jokes.

That’s when Meghan chimes in, saying: “I’ll miss them so much. You want to be the parent who’s like yes, go do it. Go do your thing. Go live that life. But I’m going to miss you so much.”

France continues, sharing how much he’s changed since welcoming his two boys. “I might die without my kids. I need my boys. If I don’t see them for a couple of days, I feel like my heart is broken.”

Meghan agrees, opening up about her own experience—including a very public moment that kept her apart from her children: “Oh, I know. The longest I went without being around our kids was almost three weeks. I was...not well.”

The extended separation she’s referencing? When she joined Prince Harry in September 2022 for a couple of charitable engagements and Queen Elizabeth unexpectedly passed away at the same time. Archie was just three years old at the time and Lilibet was 15 months old—the Sussexes opted to stay put for funeral arrangements rather than travel back and forth, which meant they were apart from their kids for 17 days. (The pair memorably hopped a plane back to Montecito the very next day after the queen’s funeral.)

It’s a stunning revelation from Meghan, but also one that’s not surprising. Harry also surfaced memories of that time in his 2023 memoir Spare: “Our quick trip would now be an odyssey. Another ten days, at least. Difficult days at that. More, we’d have to be away from the children for longer than we’d planned, longer than we’d ever been.”

If anyone can get the duchess to open up, it’s France. But also, so much about Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral was unexpected and emotional. Meghan’s revelation further extends that point of view.
