Look, we’re not saying that wearing the wrong color gown to the Academy Awards means a nominee definitely won’t win in their category, but we’re not not saying that either. In fact, fashion search engine Lyst filled us in on some pretty surprising trends when it comes to the winners of the past and what they chose to wear for the big night. So just in case this year’s Oscars nominees haven’t settled on a look, perhaps they should keep these colors in mind.

For Best Supporting Actress: Black
Twenty of the 81 total Best Supporting Actress winners have worn black to accept their award, which probably isn’t all that surprising since black is a pretty popular color choice for any red carpet. But at the same time, that’s a whopping 24 percent of all the winners! Seriously, if it worked for nearly a quarter of the women with an Oscar on their baby grand, then why shouldn’t it work for Margot Robbie or Florence Pugh?
The second-luckiest choice, with eight winners, are multicolored gowns (like Cate Blanchett’s yellow and burgundy Valentino Couture gown from 2005). In third, there’s a three-way tie between green, pink and white (like Regina King’s Oscar de la Renta gown from 2019), with seven winners each.

For Best Actress: Also Black
Yeah, we probably could have guessed this one. After all, you can never go wrong with a little black dress, or in this case a long black dress. However, the second-luckiest hue, with ten winners, is a bit more unexpected: blue. (And really, who could forget Brie Larson’s stunning Gucci number in 2016?). In third place, with nine gorgeous winners, is the color of the Oscar itself, gold.
We know black gowns aren’t exactly Bombshell actress Charlize Theron’s modus operandi, but then again, she’s nothing if not unpredictable. Either way, we’ll now be prepared to fill out our Oscars prediction ballot based on which colors we see on the red carpet.
