Kerry Washington Just Recreated the Look of Another Black Icon with Her Latest Instagram Post

Juneteenth is this Sunday, June 19, and for those who might now know, the holiday (also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day or Emancipation Day) marks the exact day in 1865 when all Americans became free from slavery, nearly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Nowadays, Juneteenth acts not only as a tribute to this important day in American history, but also as a way to celebrate and highlight Black culture. And one celebrity is getting the celebration started early with a new Instagram post: Kerry Washington.

The Scandal actress frequently uses her account to highlight famous Black women from throughout history (and dress up like them too), in a series she tags as #BlackHERstory. In her latest, Washington honored the legacy of funk singer-songwriter, Chaka Khan, while also celebrating the Juneteenth weekend.

“It’s officially #Juneteenth weekend!!!!!!!” Washington wrote. “So let’s dive into some #BlackHERstory. So I am soooooooooo excited to be honoring the legend. The icon. The queen of Funk. Ms. @chakaikhan. Yaaaaaaaaaas!!!!”
