Jason Momoa Looks Nearly Unrecognizable Without His Famous Beard & He Is *Not* Thrilled: 'I Hate It'

You might need to do a double take

When you picture Jason Momoa, chances are it’s not just his action-packed roles in Aquaman, Game of Thrones or Dune that come to mind. It’s also… the beard. That thick, rugged facial hair has practically been his signature for years. So when he showed up on social media freshly shaven? Let’s just say it was a moment.

On July 30, the actor posted a video to Instagram to promote his eco-conscious bottled water brand, Mananalu. But before we get to the sustainability mission, the video opens with something a little more shocking: Jason taking an electric razor to his beard. Yup, he shaved it all off. And his immediate reaction? “God damnit, I hate it!”—a sentence that really says it all.

In the caption, he wrote, “Haven’t shaved in six years, and here we are again.” So what inspired the big transformation? Turns out, he’s getting into character to reprise his role as Duncan Idaho in Dune Messiah, the upcoming third installment of the sci-fi saga directed by Denis Villeneuve. “Only for you, Denis,” he added.

ICYMI, Duncan died in the first Dune film but Momoa confirmed earlier this year on Today that he’s returning—this time as a clone (because sci-fi). Yes, he’s making a comeback, beard or no beard.

And while we were still processing the clean-shaven shock, he slipped in a major update about Mananalu. The company is now partnering with Boomerang Water to launch a closed-loop system that sanitizes and reuses aluminum bottles onsite. “This is the future,” he wrote. “We’re starting in Hawai’i.”

So, yes—Jason Momoa without a beard is a whole vibe shift. But helping the planet? Still totally on brand.
