When it comes to shopping for a mattress, it’s easy to go bleary-eyed. Do you want the convenience of a mattress-in-a-box or something sturdier? Foam, springs or a hybrid of the two? How do all of those firmness scales measure up in real life, and what works best for you? And when every brand has their own trademarked cooling tech with startup-caliber branding, which one is right?!

Sometimes, you just have to test things out firsthand. And for the past six years, we’ve been doing just that for the PureWow100 series. And even more so as we embarked on the Best Sleep Ever Awards. The more mattresses we tested, the more we learned: Just because they’re using similar terms doesn’t mean that all mattresses are the same.

Sealy’s been a household name for years, but how does it hold up today? Does its Posturepedic Elite Brenham style really live up to the “Elite” in its name—and deserve its $2,299 price tag?

Full disclosure: I had my parents give it a try, convincing them to finally upgrade from their 14-year-old lumpy mattress as my dad recovered from triple-bypass surgery. Doctors told us a good night’s sleep would be essential to his recovery, so what better time to try it? If it failed, I’d take advantage of the 90-day trial period to return it and buy them the mattress of their choosing.

Three months in, they had nothing but rave reviews. And so did other Brenham owners. Here’s why the brand’s reputation endures—and why the Sealy Posturepedic Elite Brenham Mattress scored so favorably that it earned a spot as one of our 2026 Best Sleep Ever award winners.

What’s So Special About the Sealy Posturepedic Elite Brenham Mattress?

Sealy’s Posturepedic line is designed to alleviate back pain, and the Elite series is top-of-the-line. Instead of uniform coils throughout, it pairs PrecisionFit coils with its MaxSupport technology, which is essentially an extra set of micro-coils throughout the midsection of the bed. This reinforces the center of the bed, preventing sagging and offering spinal alignment and support in the area where you tend to carry the most weight. The Brenham also uses a ComfortSense gel foam that’s a higher density than your standard memory foam, which is meant to disperse your body weight more evenly.

Beyond that, the top layer has SealyChill technology woven right into the fabric, which gives it a cool-to-the-touch feel, and it has SurfaceGuard protection to keep allergens and bacteria at bay.

Setup & Delivery Is Truly Seamless

Most mattress brands struggle here; there are a lot of logistics involved, and the right delivery team can make or break the experience. That’s where Sealy shined. Sealy offers a haul-away service for the existing mattress, and the team took great care to remove the existing mattress and install the new one without damaging or disturbing anything.

It’s the Most Supportive Mattress We’ve Tested

PureWow editors have tested dozens of mattresses, but what made this one stand out from the pack was how supportive it is. We went with the hybrid model, with a firm feel, and while my parents were initially worried it might be too firm, the gel top layer provided just the right goldilocks effect. “It’s plush and adds the softness you need if you’re side sleepers, like us,” my mom, Mel, shared, adding that while the mattress is firm, “it’s not stiff.”

Throughout testing and cross-referencing with other reviewers, “support” kept coming up. Those PrecisionFit coils really help cradle you and provide pressure point relief, creating a sense of weightlessness. With the firm style, you don’t sink into it, but you don’t feel like you’re sleeping on a board, either. It’s a solid mattress, with a springiness and strength to the coils that feels ultra-durable, like the bed could easily outlive its 10-year warranty.

Three months in, “the mattress has retained its shape and support,” my dad says. “No sagging or soft spots.” (While that may seem soon to gauge, we cannot say the same for some lower-tier, memory foam-only mattresses PureWow has tested.)

The Edge Support Deserves Recognition Too

If you’re the type who sits on the edge of your bed often, you may notice it start to sag—or indent where you lounge—over time. The Brenham has a DuraFlex high-density coil edge that’s designed to prevent this very issue, and you can feel it in the sturdiness along the perimeter of the mattress. (What’s also nice about that is that if you sleep right on the edge, you don’t feel as if you’re about to roll off.)

The Bottom Line: It Delivers on All Fronts

Pros

  • Super supportive
  • Provides solid back relief
  • Sturdy construction
  • Cooling gel topper prevents night sweats
  • Almost no motion transfer

Cons

  • Some loose threads along side of mattress (purely cosmetic)

In the weeks following my dad’s heart surgery, he had to sleep upright in a chair, and true rest evaded him. Chest pain would come in bursts, and it was hard to sleep for more than two or three hours at a time. But, when he was cleared to sleep in a regular bed, things changed—fast. “It feels so amazing; I look forward to getting into bed each night,” he says, sharing that he’s sleeping better than he has in years. (And no, it’s not just because he’s sleeping in a bed or on a new mattress. Both parents swear it’s far more comfortable than any mattress they’ve slept on or owned, making me reevaluate my pillow-topped Allswell number in my guest bedroom, to be honest.)

If you suffer from back pain or are a side sleeper, the Sealy Posturepedic Elite Brenham Mattress is worth a closer look. It’s been a gamechanger for them, and it could be for you too.
