"Purchasing a mattress online without testing it beforehand is really scary (especially when you're pregnant and struggling to sleep already!)," Rogers notes. But she "took the plunge because of Helix's 120-night trial period. Although some brands offer longer trials, it still made me feel comfortable enough to purchase it with the ability to return it if I did not like it."
The Helix Midnight Luxe arrived in a rather compact box, but be aware that the mattress is quite heavy, so it's a two-person job to take it to your bedroom and set it up.
Thanks to its construction of ultra-high density memory foam, gel-infused layers and up to 1,000 individually wrapped coils with reinforced support, the mattress offers the best of both worlds in terms of cradling comfort and springy support.
"I'm typically a back sleeper, but around midway through pregnancy I needed to sleep on my side. The Helix mattress is very suitable to side sleepers because it's firm, but also has a bit of give that allows your hip and shoulder to sink a little while sleeping in this position. My husband is also a side sleeper and finds the mattress to have just the right amount of support," says Rogers.
The bed comes with two top layer options: the standard Tencel cover, derived from sustainably sourced eucalyptus fibers, or for an extra $187, the GlacioTex Cooling cover, designed to draw heat away from the surface of the mattress for superior cooling. "While the mattress doesn't keep me hot at night, the plush top isn't exactly cooling either. If you sleep warm, I'd suggest choosing the cooling cover," Rogers adds.
As far as firmness goes, the Helix Midnight Luxe lands somewhere right in between—making it the perfect compromise for partners who are split on their preferences.
"The mattress is firm, but it does sink a bit (which is why it's good for side sleepers). The top layer pressed down around 2 inches when I push," observes Rogers. "For someone looking for a truly firm or soft mattress, this is not it. I would say this falls right in the middle, and would [also] make a great mattress for a guest room because it didn't doesn't sway too much one way or the other."
