I sense another fast food war coming on

Have you heard? McDonald’s is bringing back its long-awaited Snack Wraps in July. If you’re one of the many fans who petitioned for its return, odds are you’re counting down the days. Luckily, you don’t need to wait ’til next month to satisfy your craving, considering Popeye’s just launched new chicken wraps, starring the brand’s signature hand-breaded, Cajun-seasoned chicken tenders. Each portable wrap gets one tender, along with lettuce, shredded cheese and two barrel-cured pickle chips, tucked tightly into a flour tortilla.

I had the pleasure of tasting them, so read on for my honest reviews and original photos.

My Popeye’s Chicken Wraps Review

Overall, the tortillas seem too big for the chicken inside, making it feel less substantial or like less meat than what you paid for. (They’ll cost you $4 each.) The chicken tenders are also inconsistently sized, so some are notably larger than others. However, I love how soft and tender the wrap is, and the chicken is impeccably crisp without being dry (not to mention just as succulent as ever). I also love that Popeye’s adds pickles to the wraps; their pickles are super crunchy and very acidic, which is absolutely my kind of pickle.

Here’s a breakdown of the three types of classic wrap you can get:

  • Mayo: I am indeed a mayo lover, but I wish it was a bit more generously applied. I think the acidity would cut through the richness of the poultry. That said, their mayo is on the sweet side…so maybe not. It did allow me to better taste the cheese though, which has a sharp, lightly aged quality to it that I didn’t expect.
  • Honey Mustard: I wish the mustard half of the honey mustard was a bit more robust. The dressing is pretty sweet and one-note all around, but it definitely reminds me of the O.G. honey mustard McDonald’s Snack Wrap. If that was your favorite back in the day, head to Popeye’s for the next best thing—McD’s isn’t reviving that variety.
  • Spicy: As a true stan of the Popeye’s spicy chicken sandwich, I wasn’t surprised that I loved this iteration. Its heat builds as you eat, and the pickle and lettuce offer some respite every few bites. That said, I wish the chicken itself was spicy too.

Head to the drive-thru to try one yourself. And if you need something to wash it down with, might I recommend the new Blueberry Lemonade or, my personal favorite, the Blueberry Sweet Tea? It’s fruity, refreshing and tastes like summer.
