Fact: I hate the cold. I hate thinking about it. Being in it. And looking at it through my window. There are days when the thought of putting on boots and stepping into the blistery air feels like an Olympic sport. Add sub-30-degree temperatures, unpredictable commutes and office heat that’s either nonexistent or aggressively cranked up, and winter work dressing becomes its own special challenge.

While COVID has changed how often many of us physically go into the office, one thing hasn’t changed: dressing for work still matters. Whether you’re heading into meetings, logging on for Zooms or doing a bit of both, there’s a real desire to feel polished and pulled together. The trick is doing that during wintertide (when it’s freezing outside and weirdly warm inside) without constantly adding and removing layers all day. In this installment of the Grown Woman Edit, here’s how I dress smarter for work all winter.

1. Start With a Lightweight Base (This Is Non-Negotiable)
I always start with a base I’d be comfortable wearing all day on its own. If I have to peel off everything else by lunchtime because the heat is blasting, I’m still dressed appropriately and feel put together—which, honestly, is half the battle. Styling tip: Look for fabrics with stretch and breathability like ribbed cotton, silk blends or merino so you stay comfortable. And, if possible, stick to neutral tones so everything layers without too much noise.

2. Add Structure
Once the base is set, I add structure. A blazer is my go-to because it instantly signals I mean business, even when the rest of my outfit is uber simple. On days when I want something softer, I’ll layer a turtleneck under a silk dress or slip on a cardigan that still holds its shape. These middle layers offer just enough protection against the hiemal chill without weighing me down. Styling tip: Try unexpected pairings like a leather midi skirt, it’s a fun way to add an element of surprise.

3. Finish With Texture
The final layer is where I think most people give up, but it matters. Pay attention to texture, like mixing wool with silk or knits with tailoring keeps winter outfits from feeling flat or boring. Styling tip: Think in contrasts. A silky slip skirt with a chunky knit. A metallic finish paired with matte tailoring. Trust me, when you’re warm and still feel like yourself, winter stops feeling like something to survive, and that makes the Olympic sport of getting dressed worth it.
