When it comes to style, we can’t help but bow down (royal pun intended) to the trendsetting Brits across the pond. But what wardrobe advice can we borrow from them for our own attire this fall? We dialed our favorite London-based fashionista, Bethan Holt, fashion director at The Telegraph and author of The Queen: 70 Years of Majestic Style, to get the sartorial scoop on the best British-loved pieces to add to your closet.

Meet the Expert

Bethan Holt is the fashion director for The Telegraph in the UK. She is also the author of two recent books about royal style, The Duchess of Cambridge: A Decade of Modern Royal Style and The Queen: 70 Years of Majestic Style.

These 9 Fashion Trends Will Rule Fall 2023 (Plus 2 We’re Ready to Retire)

1. An Oversize Denim Shirt or Army Jacket

Top of the list for Holt, who has her finger on the pulse of all things fashion for Londoners, is an oversize denim shirt or army jacke, both of which make for a perfect trans-seasonal cover-up. “I love that you can dress them down with jeans and trainers or up with a pair of tailored trousers and a low heel,” she says. Holt adds that she’s consistently pro shopping for vintage pieces, but she has a version from Toteme and one from Frankie Shop on her fall wish list.

2. Wide-Leg Jeans

Skinny jeans are a staple—not just for Americans, but also for Brits. Still, Holt says that fall is the perfect time of year to try out a new denim silhouette. “This year, I would like to try a pair of wide-leg jeans,” she says. “It’s a look that’s great for fall with a fitted top and sleek shoes.” (Pro tip from Holt: Just be sure that the look is more tailored than slouchy.)

3. Bodysuits with Midi Skirts

Erring on the side of classic is always key for Londoners, which is why Holt is invested in experimenting with what she pairs with looser fitting styles. “I just picked up a couple of bodysuits from Everlane, which I think will give a 1950s spin to looser jeans or midi skirts.”

4. ‘70s-Inspired Tops

They’re popping up everywhere stateside and Holt reports that ‘70s-inspired tops are all the rage across the pond, too. Whether it features an oversize collar or a graphic, wallpaper-like print, the key to pulling this style off is to use it as a statement piece. In other words, keep the rest of your outfit fairly subdued—think: jeans or a simple A-line skirt—to let your top get all of the attention.

5. All Things Phoebe Philo

The former Céline creative director has the fashion world waiting with bated breath for the debut collection from her eponymous label. Despite the fact that no launch date has been confirmed, Holt says it’s the talk of the town in London. “I’d love my first autumn purchase to be from her new line, even though we still don’t know what it will look like or what the prices will be,” Holt says. (An Instagram account just recently sprung up for the new brand, according to Vogue.) While you wait, channel the style icon’s signature brand of effortlessly minimalist chic with impeccable tailoring, luxe knits and a neutral color palette.
