I'm currently in the process of moving from New York to Los Angeles, and plan on taking full advantage of my new city's year-round sun and excess of outdoor activities. Hikes through Griffith Park. Jogs on the beach. Yoga, well, everywhere. And with all these new pursuits lined up, I need a workout wardrobe that can keep up.

Granted, I own my fair share of basic leggings and sports bras. But in a place where exercise sets are practically a uniform, I want pieces that I could feel confident showing off all day—especially in the smoothie line at Erewhon. So when I was offered the chance to test out Wantable's activewear styling service, I leaped at it. New city, new lifestyle, new sweat-ready staples—and I barely had to lift a finger (or worse, struggle in a fitting room). One box and a few workouts later, here's my full review of the Wantable experience and Active edit.

How Does Wantable Work?

Wantable

Wantable is an online styling service and clothing subscription that connects each member to a personal stylist who plucks options for you based on your size, body type, budget and style preferences. In addition to everyday outfits for workdays and weekends, Wantable offers boxes that range from season-specific to mom needs to (my pick) fitness apparel.

To get started, all you have to do is take a short questionnaire and provide some details about your body shape, sizing and which types of styles, colors and patterns you tend to like or stay away from. You also have a spot to write notes to your stylist with specific requests or needs. Once the Wantable stylist takes your tastes and budget into consideration, they send you a wide range of styles (called the Stream) that you can sift through, marking what you like or don't like. This will help them narrow down the nine items you receive in your box and any following ones.

Each box has a $20 styling fee, but it's applied to your purchase if you decide to keep any of the items from that send. On that note, you have five days to try on the pieces at home and decide what you want to keep. A bag with a paid label is included in every box, so whatever you don't like, Wantable makes it easy to return. You can also choose your order frequency: ongoing (i.e., one box after another), every month, every two months or every three months.

My Review of Wantable's Active Edit

What I Like

  • personalized styling fit to my tastes
  • high-quality items
  • sets available along with standalone styles
  • super easy process

What I Don't Like

  • wish there was a bit more brand variety

Wantable

I'm petite, not into full tummy-baring outfits and have a full bust that needs support when I'm running and jumping. I was able to note all of this in Wantable's initial questionnaire for the Active edit, which asks for your height, body shape and even which parts of your body you want—and don't want—to highlight. I appreciated this since it often feels like all the cute workout fits out there were made for washboard abs.

To go along with my move, I've been really trying to experiment with my look and try new things. For one, I've been loving the 2000s activewear trend lately, so I told my Wantable stylist that I was looking for more than just basic matching sets—but rather, quality pieces that I could mix, match and style beyond a workout.

With my height (and new sunny climate in mind), I was provided great options in terms of shorts and skorts—two things I really didn't have enough of and would save me the hassle of getting things hemmed or having them bunch up at my ankles. (That said, though, I also received a pair of slouchy joggers—more on those below—that are the perfect length on me.)

Wantable stocks a good variety of bottoms, tops, sports bras, sweatshirts and jackets from a range of familiar brands, including Free People Movement, Z Supply, Beyond Yoga and Interval, the latter of which made up the entirety of my first send. So far, the brand's pieces have really impressed me. They are sturdy, structured, yet still plenty stretchy, not to mention fit me like a glove. Many of the tops/bras also have (removable) cups, something I like for extra coverage.

Some standouts? A flirty red tank with a sweetheart neckline, a mini skort with a supportive high waist and slit, a sports bra that curves up to create a unique silhouette (and show off just a tad of my upper torso) and, one of my favorites, a funnel neck, retro-inspired sweatsuit jacket that feels super luxe.

So far, I've worn these pieces for high-intensity boxing classes, walks around my neighborhood and quick home workouts. Not only have they stood up to all of them, but they've also been so comfortable—and flattering, if I do say so myself.

Wantable

You can also add in some more athleisure-leaning pieces fit for lazy days and lounging. In this department, I nabbed an incredibly cozy and comfortable sweatshirt (featuring a very L.A.-worthy graphic design) and that aforementioned pair of joggers, which are perfectly drapey and so, so soft. Together, they were ideal for a Sunday grocery run and subsequent afternoon spent on the couch. Separately, I could totally see myself throwing the sweatshirt on over a pair of leggings, post-yoga, or styling the joggers with a longline sports bra.

Everything my stylist pulled for me fits so well, and feels so high quality, I can't wait to pull 'em out for my upcoming adventures. That said, I ended up keeping every item in my box—total tally: $687. It sounds pretty up there, but each piece was priced between $56 and $129, the budget I personally set. And since everything in my send is mix-and-matchable, I practically received an entire capsule wardrobe in one (surprisingly small) package.

Bottom Line: Is Wantable Worth It?

Given that I was in the market for a total activewear overhaul, turning to Wantable and its team of stylists made the task a heck of a lot easier than it would have been if I were to scour the racks myself—especially as a short gal who isn't exactly a fitness influencer.

Now unless I do become a fitness influencer (maybe one day), I probably don't need a monthly subscription to the Active edit, but I could see myself going through the process again as the seasons (and my tastes) change. In the meantime, though, I would definitely be down to try Wantable's everyday styling box as I recalibrate my closet for the West Coast.

So if you, too, are looking for a full fashion refresh—in the activewear category or otherwise—Wantable is a solid place to start. The whole experience is not just fully personalized, but it's also a proven time-saver, making it a must for busy professionals, parents or PureWow editors moving across the country.
