As a born and raised New Yorker, I’m doing the one thing I swore I’d never do: moving to Los Angeles. Despite my lack of a driver’s license and inherent mistrust of people who seem too centered all the time, I fell in love with the palm trees, sunny skies and slower pace of the city. Will I let the laid-back West Coast transform my neurotic New York personality? That is yet to be determined. At the very least, though, I will let it transform my wardrobe.

Now that I’m ditching frigid temps and subway cars for dry heat and hiking trails, not to mention stepping into an entirely different style and social scene, there’s no question whether my closet is in need of a few updates. (After all, wearing head-to-toe black in 99-degree weather probably won’t make for the most pleasant experience.) So ahead, I’m sharing the 13 pieces I’m picking up ahead of my big move—Los Angeles ready, New Yorker approved.

Year-round temps in L.A. don’t ever really go past “sweater weather,” so I’ll need a good cardigan to depend on whenever the city gets its chilliest. I’ve had my eye on this weighty wool number from Almina Concept (which has gotten a stamp of approval from another southern California resident in the Nordstrom review section) for a while now. Softly structured, it curves in at the waist to provide some shape, while the oversized sleeves make it more visually interesting than your basic cardi.

I’ve heard so many good things about Slvrlake jeans from my fellow fashion girls, and since I’m moving to the Silverlake area, I can’t think of a better excuse to finally pick up a pair. The Grace style is one of the brand’s signature silhouettes, featuring a high waist and wide—but not too wide—cut down the legs. The midweight denim should be perfect for sunny days and breezy evenings alike, and I like that they’re 100 percent cotton, as rigid jeans aren’t just great for hugging and supporting, but also tend to have a longer lifespan than stretchy styles.

Another L.A.-based brand that's been on my radar? Heaven Mayhem, which is behind some of the most stunning (and Instagram-famous) jewelry and accessories of the past few years. I'm itching to add the Marlowe to my neck party. The elongated design and tassel accent nod to the sautoir necklaces of the 1920s, and it comes with both a suede cord and 18 karat-gold chain that can be interchanged to switch up its look. It feels opulent without being over the top, so I'm already imagining all the casual looks I could dress up with it.

This is a dress I would typically reserve for vacation, but since every day will feel like a vacay in my new home (at least compared to NYC), I could see myself adding it to my regular rotation—especially for nights out in beachy Santa Monica. The fabric looks light and airy, and I adore the sheer bell sleeves. Plus, I’ve been really feeling zebra print lately as a fresh alternative to my usual leopard. New city, new animal print.

Living in L.A. might finally reverse my aversion to flip-flops—it’s a far more acceptable shoe choice there than on the grimy sidewalks of NYC. But this 5’1” shortie still needs a little heel to boost her height. Luckily, wedge thongs are trending big time this spring and summer, so I have plenty of options. The ones I’m eyeing? These croc-embossed leather beauties from Tony Bianco. They’re sleek and minimalist in a ‘90s way, though the reptilian upper adds a luxe pop of texture. Look at me, expanding my footwear horizons.

For dressier occasions—like, perhaps, cocktails at the Chateau—I plan to channel some of that signature Old Hollywood glamour. This flowy viscose blouse, complete with a dramatic caped silhouette, feels like a nod to the silver screen starlets of the 1930s. To give it a modern spin, I’d pair it with skinny black trousers, drapey satin pants or a fitted miniskirt.

Speaking of satin pants, I’m thinking along the lines of this style from Reformation. The lustrous bottoms strike the perfect balance between effortless and elegant, and the bias cut creates a beautiful fluid drape. They have a stretch waist suitable for lounging but can also be easily dressed up with a pair of heels. Better yet, the Naia Renew Acetate fabric, made from a blend of wood pulp and recycled materials, is known to be cool to the touch and very breathable, so my legs won’t roast if I wear them out in peak heat.

As I mentioned, I’m landing in L.A. sans car or license, so I’ll still be getting my steps in on the regular (when I’m not hopping in a Waymo, that is). I’m looking for something that’s stylish, comfortable and fit for wherever the day takes me. These ballet-style Speedcats seem like just the thing. The slim, strappy design is feminine enough to pair with flouncy sundresses, but the signature Puma racing stripes and metallic hue supply some sporty edge. Most importantly, the padded heel collar and OrthoLite insole promise cushy comfort for hours of wear.

Between all the Mid-Century Modern architecture and inherent sense of free-spiritedness in the air, the 1960s still feel alive and well in L.A. To lean into that vibe (and feel like I’m in one of the Los Angeles episodes of Mad Men), I’m planning to build a collection of mod, printed minis—such as this silk-blend number from Reformation. The dainty pattern, drop-waist seam and tie details at the shoulders scream “poolside lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel.” I’m making my reservation as we speak.

More sunlight means a need for more eye coverage. These oversized Chloé sunnies don’t just nail the retro-chic aesthetic I’m chasing, but also provide plenty of protection from the intense L.A. rays. I wouldn’t normally drop this much dough on a pair of sunglasses, but I’m taking the fact that they’re on sale as a sign to make the splurge.

Considering how obsessed I’ve always been with California hippie culture, I can’t build my West Coast wardrobe without throwing a few boho pieces into the mix. On the top of my list is this lace poncho top—which, sure, reminds me of an antique doily, but in the best way. I love the tassel detail (so trendy RN), and the airy, relaxed fit that’ll keep me cool for a day exploring Topanga Canyon.

Based on some of the summer days I’ve already experienced out west, I know there are going to be times when all I want to do is throw on a floaty frock and call it a day. And it doesn’t get much better than this linen tank dress. The loose, shifty shape is ideal for preventing sweat-clung fabric, as is, of course, its 100 percent linen construction. Lightweight, breathable and exactly what you want when outside starts to feel like the surface of the sun.

Every stylish woman I know in L.A. incorporates vintage (or vintage-inspired) pieces into their everyday looks. So I can’t say I wasn’t inspired by them when I added this purse to my cart. The petite pouch looks like something you could only dream of discovering at an estate sale, with delicate beaded detailing, braided straps and a unique fringe tassel to finish it off. It makes for a stunning evening bag, but I could also dangle it from the crook of my arm en route to a daytime brunch date. It’s just one of those accessories that can make any outfit feel more special.
