Princess Anne is known for her “no muss, no fuss” approach to royal life, but even she can’t help but weave a little bit of sartorial surprise and delight into her royal work. Case in point: Her trip to Singapore last week to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between the country and the U.K. All eyes were of course on her throwback brooch, but Anne’s outfit included another nod to her past. Her tan safari suit was the very same ensemble she first wore over 50 years ago.
Princess Anne Dons Ultimate Royal Re-Wear with Safari Suit from Over 50 Years Ago
Let’s hear it for the OG sustainable style queen

The initial occasion was a polo match: Held in July 1973, the Princess Royal—who, at the time, was married to her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips—wore the suit to the sporting event, held at Smith’s Lawn in Windsor Park. Back then, Anne wore it with a belt; she also styled it with a neck scarf. So chic. (We saw many royal watchers sharing the royal rewear—click here to take a peek.)
Fast forward to last week when the princess joined her current husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, at the Rolls-Royce Seletar Campus in Singapore. The belt was gone and the neck scarf replaced with a retro-looking collared shirt, but the pointed collar was the giveaway. Lo and behold, Anne was wearing a modified version of that very same 1973 safari suit. (It’s worth noting that she was also spotted in it at Heathrow Airport in 1975 when she was on her way back from an equestrian event in Boston.)
Is this the ultimate royal repeat? The royal family as a whole—ranging from King Charles to Kate Middleton—are known for their efforts to recycle favored items from their closets in a nod to sustainability, but also proof of classic and timeless styles.
Still, Anne’s safari suit feels bold and unexpected. Brava to the Princess Royal (but also her style team) for digging it out.
