Los Angeles women have their finger on the pulse when it comes to trendy style. But they also know how to make it their own. Case in point: pleated pants, which I’ve noticed popping up just about everywhere north of Long Beach in recent weeks.

From celebs like Jodie Turner-Smith (shown here out and about in her pleated pants) to random Erewhon shoppers, women in LA are enjoying their springtime in a look that’s a surprisingly fresh take on a classic shape. Instead of the throwback ‘80s style that was a cornerstone of the whole Ralph Lauren/preppie thing, the women I’m seeing are going for slightly oversized pleated trousers, and wearing them casually, with a little more bareness. Think: paired with tank tops, midriff-revealing T-shirts and puff-sleeve tops or layered under a blazer or a long-sleeved shirt for the morning chill. They’re also forgoing formal woolen or stiff khaki materials in favor of lightweight linen or cotton blends.

Belt it, don’t belt it; pair it with sandals or sneakers; or roll it up and go for an afternoon stroll along Santa Monica Beach. There’s no wrong way to wear your pleated pants (except with a shirt super tucked-in or cinched within an inch of your life).

Here are some favorites for sale now—whether you’re La-la-land bound or just want to be transported there.
