I was recently at a press event in Nolita when I spotted the most elevated take on eyelet I’ve ever seen. The woman wearing it was in her 40s and had styled a black co-ord set (midi length skirt and short-sleeve top) with a butter yellow bralette peeking through. It was feminine, it was bold and to up the ante, she added a vintage oversize fur coat. Altogether, it was a lewk.

Yes, we know that eyelet, with its warm-weather-friendly peek-a-boo cut-outs, is evergreen. But it’s also very much on trend for spring and summer this year, with brands from Sea New York to Sézane offering up darling iterations. Still, what caught my attention is the creative way New Yorkers are wearing it. Eyelet may be delicate and airy, but Manhattanites are giving it an edge.

Think: the woman at my local coffee shop wearing what appeared to be a Doen dress with a cropped leather jacket thrown over her shoulders. Or the mom at elementary school pickup in a billowy top with barrel-leg jeans and Adidas sneakers. In other words, this isn’t Easter-esque eyelet; it’s eyelet that easily mixes into your everyday wardrobe via unexpected pairings (like leather or a metallic bootie) or a pop of on-trend color (like the aforementioned butter yellow). It’s even taking on new, sexy shapes, like Tracee Ellis Ross’ turtleneck bodysuit with allover grommet eyelet.

I think Vogue described it best when they said the spring/summer 2025 runways highlight soft power but, “you don’t have to renounce your strength to be feminine.”

PureWow’s fashion editor Abby Hepworth, agrees: “The easiest way to rock the fabric is by playing with a sort of ‘opposites attract’ approach, balancing sweet lace with sturdy denim or canvas—or even leather.” She adds that one of her favorite things about eyelet is that it’s typically more durable than other lace variations. “I don’t ever feel that I need to be precious about it, despite the fact that it gives off a delicate vibe.” So go ahead and pair it with your grungiest jeans or most downtown moto jacket. After all, it’s the New York way.
