If there’s one thing we know for certain, it’s that old trends don’t die hard. In fact, we’ve continued to see a resurgence of nearly all past nostalgic relics, such as the low-rise look (emotional baggage in tow), Juicy Couture tracksuits, pearlcore and more. Hot off the TikTok press for this summer’s ultimate cool girl trend is none other than parachute pants.

But don’t take our word for it, besides prominent TikTok influencers deeming them the “it” pant for summer and generating 1 billion views (yeah, you heard that right) on videos featuring the trend, searches for “parachute pants” are hitting peak popularity on Google Trends as well.

Wait, So What Exactly Are Parachute Pants?

We’re so glad you asked. TikTokers are loving this lightweight, baggy style that could be deemed a relative to cargo pants. But unlike the structured, utility-influenced cargo pant, parachute pants have a loose, drawstring fit at the waist and ankle (like a literal parachute). Originally popularized in the ‘80s as the harem pant by the hip-hop and breakdancing scene (thanks, MC Hammer!), we’re now seeing a modern-day rebirth of the billowy pants courtesy of TikTok.

How Do You Style Them?

With a more tapered fit and less exaggerated drop crotch than the ‘80s version, modern parachute are a touch less intimidating to wear, but no less statement-making.

The flowy, nylon-esque material is so bold that we suggest keeping it simple up top. Channel your inner Bridgerton and pair it with your favorite corset top like Madison Beer above, throw on a form-fitting graphic tee for a grunge look or stay simple with a neutral-colored tube top.
