Kate Middleton Has Carried This Under-$500 Leather Clutch Since 2021—We Tested It Out

Princess Catherine’s lifestyle is fancy. This we know. I’ve carried Strathberry before (I’m in love with their Mosaic style), but a clutch felt like a handbag with a high chance of being relegated to the back corner of my closet, ready to go only with a formal invitation.

This is what surprised me most about the Multrees Chain Wallet. Yes, I reached for it for a sparkly evening out for drinks with a friend in NYC, but I just as easily carried it to the office, paired with a cute white button-up shirt and form-fitting skirt.

Disclaimer: I tested the embossed leather taupe colorway. (Catherine’s navy hue is sold out, but the clutch comes in six different hues in total.) Perhaps this is what made it feel rather versatile as I moved throughout the various occasions that crop up day-to-day: It blended seamlessly with every look.

The style itself is sleek and timeless and features the brand’s signature gold “music bar” hardware (inspired by vintage leather music folios used to carry sheet music, per the Strathberry site). The delicate chain strap is detachable, but you can also carry this clutch as a crossbody bag should you desire. A magnetic strap keeps everything safely enclosed and there’s also an interior zipped pocket and eight card slots.

On the whole, it just felt so effortless and elegant. It also is a brand that easily aligns with the royals’ overall commitment to sartorial sustainability. Founded in 2013 by husband-and-wife team Guy and Leeanne Hundleby, Strathberry’s ethos is to deliver bags that can carried by multiple generations. “We never wanted to be a bright neon green bag that would last one summer and then be put in the cupboard gathering dust,” Leeanne told InStyle in 2025.

In the case of the Princess of Wales, we know: She has the privilege of not having to carry much (heck, she likely doesn’t carry cash at all). But for us mere mortals, this is where you’ll have to be thoughtful about paring back. For example, on my night out in New York, I wanted to bring my phone, a few cards, some cash, a lip balm, keys and my AirPods. There wasn’t enough space for my AirPods, and I had to carry a single key to make it work. This is by no means a deal breaker (any clutch means you’re working with limited space) but it’s worth noting. That said, the fact that this particular style could fit my iPhone Pro was a win.

This is definitely an option that my non-royal self will keep in regular rotation. I’ll add that whenever I carry it out and about, I get loads of compliments, too.
