Shopping online as a shortie can sometimes require complex math equations (take the height of the model, divided by the length of your leg times the square root of the skirt length, etc.) and careful consideration. Unless you’re browsing petite-specific sizing at a petite-friendly brand, it can be difficult to gauge how a certain piece of clothing will look on your body.

But luckily, you have me as your short-girl guide. I’ve been hitting dressing rooms at all our favorite retailers to give you a petite’s-eye view of the styles you’ve been on the fence about, so you can see how they look on someone who’s 5’1”—and learn whether they’re flattering on folks of less-than-modelesque proportions. My most recent stop? Our beloved J.Crew.

Although the brand offers pants and jeans in petite (and tall) lengths, most of its dresses come only in standard sizes, so hemlines and hiplines aren’t always going to hit at the right spots on a short person. To see which ones actually do, I plucked every dress—12, to be exact—off the rack at my local J.Crew and took them into the dressing room. Here are the six I’m giving my petite stamp of approval.

Let’s start with the dress that I actually couldn’t leave the store without: this ruched scoop-neck with, perhaps, the most flattering smocked bodice I’ve ever worn. Despite the fact that the skirt comes down to my ankles (making it decidedly not a midi), the rest of the proportions are perfection. The thick, gathered waistband hits at just the right spot to give me a cinched, hourglass shape, while the puff sleeves and neckline (finished with an adjustable zipper) are neither too big nor too low. Meanwhile, the cotton poplin is nice and weighty, keeping the A-line silhouette solidly structured—a boon for petites who may get swallowed up in excessively flowy fabrics. And the color? Swoon! Something about it just made me feel like a ‘60s Italian starlet à la Sophia Loren, so yes, this came home with me.

I’m usually not a fan of slinky slip dresses, which tend to cling at the most inconvenient places on me, but I couldn’t help but be drawn to the cheetah print (and since my task was to try on all the dresses available in-store, I was going to give it a whirl anyway). Let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised by the fit. The soft and silky viscose draped beautifully on my form—no lumps and bumps detected. Again, it was ankle-length on moi, but that length, combined with the sleek, body-skimming fit, made me feel long and elegant. One of my favorite features, however, was the drawstring neckline, which adjusted to my bust just how I wanted it to. OK, I might have to order this one, too…

Vertical stripes are a short gal’s best friend, so I had a good feeling about this shirtdress—and wasn’t disappointed. While I do wish it was a tad shorter, the knee-grazing length it had on me does come with the benefit of making it office appropriate (and I’m always looking for cute pieces to wear to work that don’t feel stuffy or dowdy). The low tier on the ruffle skirt gives it a drop-waist effect I like, and the swingy silhouette is airy and comfortable, although it was roomy enough in my usual size medium that I could have sized down to a small for a less voluminous look. All in all, though, the shape, stripes and crisp cotton poplin make it a winner in my book.

Don’t be fooled, this is not your ordinary ‘90s slip dress. The figure-hugging style is made of the brand’s “memory poplin” material, a blend of viscose and cotton that’s actually quite thick and sturdy—though not in a bad way. When I put it on, I really loved that it held its shape and, by extension, mine. The fabric feels satin-y to the touch and has a hint of shine to it, courtesy of the interwoven metallic threads, and it’s actually meant to have that crinkled look to add dimension and a laid-back vibe. It appears a bit busty on me here but that’s because I didn’t have someone to help me fiddle with the adjustable straps (I’m fairly certain I could have hoisted up the V-neckline). As far as the hemline goes (literally), it was just shy of a midi, stopping at a slender spot on my leg to show off my ankles.

This floral frock is made of the brand’s silky smooth crepe de chine, which makes it feel light as air and gives it a lovely little swoosh. It’s decked out in delicate daisies and, though you may not be able to make it out in the photo, features all-over pintuck pleating that really elevates the look. I can see this becoming an easy, throw-and-go go-to for my fellow petites, especially if paired with a belt to define your waist a bit (and offset the high neck/longer-than-mini length). A solid wardrobe staple, if I do say so myself.

A great layering base for autumn days, this boxy shift dress can be worn solo as a short-sleeve, or paired with a knit top or button-down underneath. Beyond being versatile, it looks polished and profesh, particularly because it ends just above my knee rather than mid-thigh like it does on the website’s model. Now, it is made of 100 percent cotton denim, so it is stiff and hefty, but again, I like the structure and the retro style that comes with it. I’ll admit that the oversized workwear-inspired pockets aren’t the best for pint-sized people (the smaller the details, the better), but everything else about the number makes them forgivable, IMO.
