As a 5’1” editor who works in fashion, I know just how hard it can be to shop online. So, in my ongoing quest to help you make informed decisions during your next digital shopping spree, I’ve been hitting some of our readers’ favorite stores to show off how popular pieces really look on not-quite-statuesque statures—and, in the process, I’m calling out the items that actually work.

Next up on my petite-gal tour of dressing rooms in NYC? Everyone’s go-to for minimalist masterpieces: Everlane. With high-quality linen and cotton making up most of its materials, not to mention its totally timeless designs, Everlane is an excellent source for investment pieces you’re sure to wear for multiple seasons (and dare I say years) to come. But with great splurge comes great responsibility—and I consider it mine to vet the brand’s latest styles for my fellow petites.

After peeling around 12 items on and off in the sweltering Soho heat last weekend, these are the six Everlane finds I can wholeheartedly recommend to women under 5’3”—no tailoring required.

I beelined it to this dreamy number as soon as I spotted it hanging across the room, and y’all, it was love at first touch. The mixed-media design features a stretchy bodice made of supremely soft Supima cotton, along with a crisp flared skirt of organic cotton that’s light, cool and as its name suggests, totally fitting for a trip to the riviera (any riviera!). And when I actually tried it on? Cue a complete dressing room swoon. The A-line shape was so flattering on my frame, and I was pleasantly surprised that the top part wasn’t nearly as see-through as I was expecting—I mean, I’m literally wearing a black bra here and you can hardly notice beneath the white. Meanwhile, the skirt has pockets (!!!) and a lining, so it keeps your bottom half plenty covered, too.

Forget flashy bags and stiletto heels: There is truly no better investment than a really good T-shirt. And no one does them better than Everlane. When I tucked this slightly cropped, perfectly-proportioned-for-a-petite tee into the jeans I’ll discuss more below, I felt like I had finally achieved the sense of French-girl effortlessness I’ve been chasing since my days stalking street style blogs in high school. It’s crafted from 100 percent, soft-yet-sturdy organic cotton, and is slouchy and fitted in all the right places. Needless to say, I walked out of the store with this baby in my bag, although I did size down from the medium pictured here to a more fitted size small.

Confession: I have never owned a pair of white jeans—until now. Joining the T-shirt above in my shopping bag was this pair of barrel jeans in cool-for-the-summer ecru. Between their quality feel (courtesy of 98 percent organic cotton, with 2 percent elastane for a touch of stretch), relaxed barrel-leg silhouette (which, yes, can totally work for petites) and comfy high waist, these pants were not about to leave my grasp. (In fact, I wore this entire outfit to work the next day and have never felt so stylish.) The best part, of course, is the fact that their standard size has a 27-inch inseam. While that may be somewhat cropped on taller folks, it’s the ideal ankle length on my 5’1” figure, so I can wear them with heels, sneakers and everything in between without needing to get them hemmed.

Brought on, perhaps, by Parker Posey’s “Lorazepam chic” nightgown style in the most recent season of The White Lotus, flowy frocks fit for bedtime are a serious trend this summer. Case in point? This wear-anywhere midi that, thanks to its elasticated accents, flutter sleeves and airy construction, has a touch of that vintage nightgown look, but certainly wouldn’t seem out of place paired with an avocado toast at brunch. I liked the shape it gave me via the stretchy seams on the bodice, as well as its length. As you can see, it’s a bit longer on me than on the model, but it hits at a lower spot on my calf where it doesn’t cause my legs to appear thicker and shorter (as some midis can). And, as always, the vertical stripes are always a bonus in my dress-to-elongate playbook.

Longer, baggier shorts may seem like an unconventional pick for short women, but ever since I found ways to make bermuda bottoms work for petites, I haven’t looked back. That brings me to these Everlane jorts, which deliver laid-back, lived-in vibes with their perfectly relaxed fit and soft blend of cotton and Tencel—not to mention the frayed hem that falls just above my knee. Even on my short-gal stature, the shorts are long enough to feel on-trend, but not so long as to completely compact my legs and shrink me down even further. Better yet, the mid-rise waist felt breathable and comfortable, though I probably could have sized down one and still had plenty of room to exhale.

All I could think about when trying on this billowy beauty was planning a day at the beach. Picture: the casual elegance of its tiered skirt blowing in a breeze, the gauzy organic cotton hovering just above your skin to keep you cool and ventilated. Heck, simply slipping into this loose and lightweight dress felt like a relief after walking around the sauna that was New York City that day. This one also boasts on-seam pockets and a full lining (great!), but I will call out that the straps aren’t adjustable—slightly annoying since I couldn’t get a real snug fit up top, but given the dress’s easy, breezy nature, this little detail didn’t bother me too much. After all, it’s rare for me to find a maxi (on me, at least) sundress that delivers an airy feel, but doesn’t add a ton of height-reducing volume in the process.
