Twenty years ago, the New York Times (specifically writer-and-future-podcast-star Michael Barbaro) reported that prestige American department stores were closing their petite departments. Why? Because the American consumer was tired of shopping dowdy petite offerings and opting to tailor standard size garments instead.

How the fashion has changed. Today, petite pieces are selling like hotcakes, sometimes in dedicated brand sections (ah, the joy of trying on everything in the upstairs petite department of the Century City Mall Anthropologie), but more often from retailers that ship petite offerings direct to consumer. It’s as though we shorties have said, We don’t need your stinking department store floor space, we have petite fashion journos showing us well-fitting options right here on our phone. Yep, petite-friendly clothing brands for women serve those of us under 5’4” with all the style, and none of the pesky trips to the alternation lady.

To prove it, I polled my fellow short-gal editors here at PureWow on their go-to brands for petite women, whether they’re searching for hem-free denim or wedding guest dresses that won’t drag on the dance floor.

Best for Sophisticated Workwear

1. ME+EM

Me + Em

“I really (really) cannot get over how well-suited ME+EM is to shorter frames. It is a brand that I can rely on for a fit that almost always works, whether I'm trying on a suit or a dress,” says Rachel Bowie, PureWow senior director of special projects and royals. While not offering all styles in petite sizing, ME+EM has a curated page named “Petite Flattering,” where shoppers can find height-friendly options. From trousers with a shorter leg to jackets and tops tailored to hit just the right places on a petite’s waist and hip, these styles are classic, well-made and feel as luxe as they look.

Best for Sexy Date Wear

2. Reformation

Reformation

When I want a dress that’s going to get noticed, or a figure-skimming outfit that’s trendy and demure (but still alluring), I dip into Reformation’s petite offerings. The brand is synonymous with cool-girl attitude and style, and I’m here for it, with all the bias-cut dresses and crisp linen separates. One thing I do check with Reformation pants especially is the inseam length, since I’ve had some trousers require heels even though I purchased them in petite sizes (they fit my bum perfectly, though). Quality linen, silk and lace are what keeps me coming back to this brand, since, for example, my Mason shorts are looking good even in their third summer of repeated wear.

3. Quince

Quince

While Quince doesn’t offer length-specific sizing in all categories, I can vouch for the label’s petite-friendly pieces, which are curated for easy browsing here.  I love that the linen pants are slightly cropped for tall women, but fit full-size on me, and also that the matching camp shirts are cropped so that they hang just below the waist on my 5’3” body. The washable silk, too, fits well—I just sized down one size on the sheath dress I wear with sneakers during the day or sometimes as a nightgown. All this at direct-to-consumer pricing? I’m sold.

4. Lauren Ralph Lauren

Lauren Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren wants you to look appropriate, in everything from his big-ticket purple label brand to his more affordable Lauren Ralph Lauren line. And you’re not going to look presentable with a baggy jacket or dragging trousers, are you? Perhaps that’s the motivation behind his wide offerings of petite clothing, or maybe it’s that luminous wispy muse of a wife of his, Ricky? No matter, I’ve been the beneficiary many times over with dresses and denim sized to fit little me.

5. Anthropologie

Anthropologie

“I gotta go with Anthropologie. They consistently make all of their stylish, best-selling clothing in petite sizes that are actually built for smaller frames, not just hemmed three inches higher,” says PureWow Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint, who swears by the Tobie shirtdress by Exquise ($198), which she describes as “a professional (but never stodgy) staple I can dress up with heels or down with sneakers or moto boots. Plus...pockets!" Anthropologie’s house brand Maeve, including the best-selling and flattering on everybody Colette pant, is a standout here, as is the wide selection of dresses for every occasion, which often also offered in short sizing.

Widest Petite Sizing

6. Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch

“As a shortie, I love shopping at Abercrombie & Fitch for everything from denim to wedding guest dresses—almost every single style (save for tops) is available in petite sizing,” explains PureWow Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida. “I have never needed to hem a pair of jeans or a maxi dress from there, and it feels so nice to know that I can shop online and not be taken by surprise by a piece's length when it arrives.” And pants- and jeans-wearers will appreciate that many bottoms offer “extra short” lengths, which measure 27.5 inches, inseam-wise.

7. Petite Studio

Petite Studio

I’ve worn a couple of the coats made by Petite Studio, a small, slow fashion label that creates a tightly curated collection each season with pieces tailored especially for wearers 5’4” and shorter. The aesthetic is one of tidy French girl chic: Clean lines, classic shapes and versatile neutral tones syncopated with a few red garments thrown in for sexy variation. The coats are especially beautifully tailored, capturing the oversized look I love without making me appear swallowed up in them. I look forward to adding yet another jacket or dress to my collection of Petite Studio this fall.

Best for Classic Styles

8. Ann Taylor

Ann Taylor

The wide and deep selection of petite tops, pants, dresses and skirts at Ann Taylor means there’s always something I can wear if I need a dependable staple piece. And the sizeable collection of curvy styles means it’s going to fit. In recent seasons, Ann Taylor has become more high-end looking, with more adventurous colors (swoon-worthy lavender trousers!) and edgier silhouettes (belted jackets abound for fall 2025, for example). And you can always count on a few variations of wearable-with-anything black pants with inseams under 28 inches.

Best for Casual Pants

9. Madewell

Madewell

I’m a short-legged woman who long ago made my peace with having to endlessly roll up hems in order to even try on the latest pant styles. So what a relief that I can depend on Madewell to take every new shape, trend and colorway of trouser and recreate it for my Gumby legs! Right out of the gate, I can wear barrel jeans. Baggy utility pants I’m not swimming in? Here for me. And the brand doesn’t sleep on dresses and skirts, either. (Note—while Madewell makes petite-specific sizing for some of its dresses, I’ve also had good luck with some of its regular-sized minis.) Petites: Come for the trousers, stay for the tops and frocks.

Best for Colorful Accent Pieces

10. Boden

Boden

When I want a fashion pick-me-up, I reach for the Boden items in my wardrobe. The colorful, comfortable and versatile styles on offer are as happy-making as a walk in the English countryside—no surprise from this British maker. Pants, dresses and skirts are available in petite sizing, and the separates can me mixed and matched with a lot of my go-tos such as chambray button-fronts and T-shirts. (Hello, clashing stripes trend.) Additionally, the knitwear pieces in petite are noteworthy because they are actually scaled down, not just knit a little tighter, so the stretch of the thread is still elegant. If I have any quibble it’s that the petite offerings are so popular, they tend to sell out quickly, so act fast if you see a Boden piece you love.

Best to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

11. J.Crew

J.Crew

I love J.Crew for its wide selection of petite-scaled pants, jackets, coats, dresses and blouses, and find it invaluable as a resource when I know I have 10 minutes to find an outfit I can be sure will fit, and need it delivered soon. The suiting fits my arm length and the matching pants hit at the top of the shoe instead of dragging on the ground. What’s more, J. Crew isn’t just making staples in petite sizes; the brand is also turning out lilac-print day pajamas ($148; $120) and leopard-pattern bias-cut skirts ($128) sized for shorties. Add to this the brand’s exceptional T-shirts and tissue turtlenecks for layering, and there’ s something to make every petite happy.
