Can I let you in on a little secret? While most people are savoring the last bits of summer and dreading the end of spaghetti strap tank tops and micro shorts, I’m already diving into fall fashion trends and planning my autumn outfits. From jackets to shoes, my fall shopping list is growing (yes, Hunter boots are on it!), but nothing beats the excitement of a brand-new coat to mark the change of seasons. This year, I'm particularly excited because a trend I love, the hourglass jacket, continues its reign.

First seen on stylish women in Copenhagen, New York, and Paris last year, the hourglass silhouette defines your waist and lends itself to unconventional pairings. I knew that it’d be around to stay for fall 2025 when Sabrina Carpenter showed up to the Dior menswear SS26 show bedecked in the legendary Bar Jacket. (Not to mention Princess Catherine, who followed suit.) And though we’re a year on, brands like Jenni Kayne and Quince have continued to note that this cut is one of their most popular. I broke down everything you need to know about the hourglass jacket trend for fall, including how to style it and my favorite pieces to shop.

What Is an Hourglass Jacket?

The enduring trend in fall fashion represents a move away from oversized silhouettes towards more tailored looks. Its hourglass shape offers flattering waist-definition that complements various body shapes, from straight to pear-shaped. This design not only adds a polished touch to any outfit but also elevates your look, whether you’re heading to a board meeting or enjoying a casual Sunday morning.

But you don’t necessarily need to buy a whole new jacket to get in on the trend. You can easily achieve the look with blazers or cardigans that you already own by simply adding a belt at the smallest part of your waist.

How to Style Hourglass Jackets

While there are a handful of ways to wear the structured piece, I broke down a few ways I can’t wait to style hourglass jackets this fall, below.

  • Texturize with layers: Fall calls for turtlenecks and basic long-sleeve T-shirts, which—I’m thrilled to tell you—look fabulous layered under an hourglass jacket. This adds both warmth and dimension without adding bulk. Plus, it’s an ideal way to include a vibrant color.
  • Lean into tailoring: Since hourglass jackets are all about defining the waist, pair them with tailored pants or skirts to maintain a sleek silhouette. High-waisted trousers or pencil skirts work particularly well and look unbelievably chic for a special evening or work event.
  • Reach for accessories: If you want to try the trend with pieces you already own, use a statement, chain or minimal belt to accentuate your waist. You can even add belts to jackets and sweaters that are already tailored for more definition, and don’t forget to add other accessories to finish it up. Right now, I especially love wearing cuff bracelets over the sleeves for an extra pop.
  • Play with proportions: Try barrel-leg jeans or pieces that follow the flared hem of the jacket, continuing the balloon effect before tapering at the legs. To keep the focus on the coat, opt for a matching mini skirt or skort for a leggy look.

I’ve been eyeing this beaut for many months, talking myself out of buying the pricey cardigan, but I think it’s time to listen to my impulse and invest in this chic staple. It’s made from a luxurious blend of 70 percent wool and 30 percent cashmere, so I can imagine how soft and warm it’ll feel on my skin. The fitted bodice isn’t the only detail that’ll draw you in, there are slight bell sleeves that’ll really make it stand out amongst your other knitwear.

This hourglass blazer is putting the “power” in power suit. Shoulder pads, a sharp, cinched waist and a single-breasted closure cut a sharp figure with a deep V-neck. There are also functioning front flap pockets. I love the more exaggerated, structured shape, which you can style easily with jeans, trousers or a skirt. Not bad for an under-$100 find.

If you liked the Cooper Cardigan but find the price eye-watering, Quince makes a similarly structured cardigan for under $200. The Mongolian cashmere knit comes in seven colors with functional pockets and bell sleeves, plus a button-front closure so you can wear it layered with a shirt or on its own.

Now here’s an elegant blazer that checks all my boxes—it’s fitted, has a chic curved crew neckline and is split at the waist, which will look flawless paired with anything high-waisted, from jeans to a skirt. What’s more, there’s an adjustable back buckle detail that sets this long-waisted blazer apart from the lot, letting you cinch your waist to your liking.

When I think of refined luxury, I think of Helsa. Case in point: This hourglass jacket complete with a darted waist and a crepe twill fabric. Wear it with a matching trouser to make the ultimate power suit, and on chilly days, try layering a turtleneck underneath. A few buyers say that the shoulder pads run quite large. One Revolve reviewer says, “It overwhelmed my petite frame, [but] worked beautifully on my friend with a larger chest.”

This hourglass jacket caught my eye for two reasons. First, it’s got a different take from the traditional, tailored lapels, making it feel more relaxed. A single button closure cinches the waist and provides a peplum effect without appearing too exaggerated. Oh, and did I mention it’s under $50?

Wear this cozy sweater the next time you want to look put-together and prioritize comfort. It’s made from organic cotton and merino wool, a warm and breathable blend that’ll keep you from feeling stuffy. “It's very tailored and classic,” says one happy buyer. “It feels very high-quality [and] not too heavy of a material, so it’ll work well in the fall and winter.”

I’m loving this inventive take on the silhouette by House of CB. Notably, the double-breasted cut with an eye-catching two side buttons to close. Notched lapels and buttoned cuffs add the last touches of flair, with a sharp, cinched waist that means business.

When in doubt, I can always count on an Aritzia blazer to be there for me, and the cinch on this single-breasted blazer is *chef’s kiss.* Best of all, it’s made from the brand’s recycled and (Re)essential fabric, which is a stretchy fabric that’s known for having a soft-yet-durable structure that won’t lose its shape as you go about your day.

One of the originators of this trend is none other than Christian Dior. If you’re in the mood for a *major* splurge, the French fashion house still designs a contemporary interpretation for $4,300 featuring wool and silk. While the current selection comes from former creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, newly installed Jonathan Anderson has shown (via Sabrina Carpenter at the SS26 menswear show in June)  that this iconic silhouette isn’t going anywhere—and I’m excited to see where he takes it.
