His & Hers, Netflix’s newest crime thriller starring Tessa Thompson and Jon Berthnal, is currently the No. 1 show on the streaming platform, and it’s for good reason. With several surprising turns and a huge finale plot twist I’m still thinking about weeks later, the six-episode limited series keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. But what really had me hooked—and nearly distracted me from the plot—was Anna Andrews’s (Thompson’s) polished news anchor wardrobe.

If you aren’t familiar, the show follows a husband and wife investigating a string of murders in their Georgian hometown, Dahlonega. Andrews is a journalist vying for her old job after disappearing for a year, and her estranged husband, Jack Harper (Berthnal), is the local detective leading the murder case (although, he shouldn’t be). The real kicker? They both could be suspects.

Throughout the series, we see Thompson donning several noteworthy monochromatic ensembles. Think: silk blouses, midi dresses, structured knits, trench coats and a very intentional use of bold hues. The show’s costume designer, Mirren Gordon-Crozier, detailed her strategic styling and color blocking process in her Substack, Accent Aigu (Á La Mode), writing “I was immediately drawn to the bold, saturated hues traditionally used on-air, rarely prints, almost always monochromatic looks with a strong visual. This became the foundation of Anna’s wardrobe.”

Gordon-Crozier also notes the functional use of color for “narrative and emotional structure,” with each color representing Anna’s emotional state as secrets from her past unfold. If it wasn’t the saturated jewel tones catching my eye, it was the carefully curated (oftentimes vintage) pieces worn by Thompson’s character, particularly the trench coats. “Tessa Thompson’s trench coats in His & Hers are the kind of wardrobe detail that quietly carries the show’s aesthetic,” slacks Fashion and Beauty Director Deena Campbell. “They feel classic but not super stiff. I love the way she layered them over blouses and midi dresses, or paired them with sharper tailoring. It’s a great example of how [the show] leaned into elevated ‘90s looks.”

The nod to the ‘90s isn’t coincidental either, as Gordon-Crozier mentions referencing Tom Ford's stint at Gucci for Thompson’s wardrobe—mainly his use of “jade hues, clean lines and powerful silhouettes for women.” If there’s anything I love more than a good murder mystery, it’s an even better fashion reference.

Below, find a selection of picks inspired by Anna Andrews’s sharp news anchor style, from a belted trench to a plush silk-satin blouse.

Anna’s off-air looks were just as rave-worthy, IMO. When she wasn’t in front of her one-man camera crew, she was scheming around town in structured sweaters, straight leg jeans, loafers, a Chanel work tote and a powerful belted trench. Her original look featured a COS trench coat, an Argyle sweater from &Daughter and a Khaite snakeskin belt, but I think this pick from Reformation is strong enough to stand on it's own.

When the viewers first meet Anna, her wardrobe consists of various blues and teals, which “signifies emotional restraint, melancholy and introspection: a visual expression of [her] sadness and guarded inner life.” This cashmere turtleneck is very similar to the one she wore to the town hall while addressing uneasy Dahlonega locals. Although sadness (and grief) is a recurring theme for Anna, she looked very satisfied stirring up trouble in her all-blue getup.

As I mentioned, Anna was often seen with a large tote on her person, specifically a Chanel Cerf tote from the early aughts. This bag from JW Pei has a similar structured, but slouchy silhouette, with the ability to wear it crossbody or carry it by its two top handles.

“Red signals danger and heightened emotion…embodying passion, anger and the moment when buried truths can no longer be contained,” writes Gordon-Crozier. If Anna wasn’t sporting a bright red lip, she was wearing a scarlet piece like this chic cardigan from Sézane.

One of my favorite fashion moments from Thompson’s character was her green ensemble she wore to visit an old “friend.” This use of green was meant to show “unease and emotional ambiguity, often suggesting jealousy, unearthed truths and the slow emergence of something long buried.” While the meeting with her former acquaintance was unpleasant, her look was incredibly stylish. Her full outfit involved a snake print trench (which they dyed green on set), a matching mini skirt and a silk blouse close to the one above.

Another standout star from Anna's wardrobe? Her subtle but noticeable gold jewelry. For her several monochromatic moments, Thompson wore vintage gold clip-on earrings with a colored resin center coordinated to her outfit.

Anna’s final on-air look is a vibrant orange, concluding her story with “a warm, sunlit hue used deliberately for its emotional and narrative resonance,” says Gordon-Crozier. Anna paired her dress with a coordinating fiery trench, but if you want a casual approach, the styling above works especially well for spring—just add a light cardigan.
