From a cornflower blue coat to black and white florals, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, always knows the right royal moment to weave a little something extra into her style. (Remember her over-the-knee suede boots? I found a very similar pair here, $1995.) This weekend was no exception as she turned up at the Coral Gold Cup Meeting at Newbury Racecourse with her husband, Prince Edward, by her side. Sophie wore a signature coat dress and regal topper (both royal staples), but it was the surprising color combo—hot pink and sage—that most caught our eye.

After all, one color is subtle (sage) while the other (hot pink) is much more bold, but Sophie found an elegant way to marry them together introducing us to a sartorial winter pairing that feels as fresh as it is unexpected.

Her coat dress—designed by Claire Mischevani, a British designer—offered a structured silhouette that, with its oversize bow at the neckline a la Kate Middleton, was certainly interesting enough to stand out on its own. Still, Sophie chose to add a beige hat adorned with a hot pink ribbon and, quite frankly, the two hues together just seemed to work. TBH, it all comes down to color theory—pink and green are complementary colors and naturally enhance each other when side by side. (The impact is even greater when a bold hue like hot pink is anchored by sage, which is an earthier green.)

Now, we’d be remiss if we didn’t also mention Prince Edward, who wore a double breasted suit and looked pretty dapper himself. But our attention is always first and foremost on Sophie.
