Boudoir Bottoms Trend: Lace polka dot slip skirt, lace brown shorts, lace pink bloomer hems
Urban Outfitters/Anthropologie/Reformation

Last spring, trendsetters were raiding their boyfriend’s closets for slouchy jeans and baggy track shorts. But this year? The fashion girls are plucking pieces straight out of their own lingerie drawers to build the lower half of their ensembles.

From silky shorts to lace-trimmed slip skirts and airy bloomers, bottoms once reserved for the boudoir have lately become street style staples. The look is flirty and feminine to be sure—but it’s not so much “sexy” as it is subversive. This isn’t underwear as outerwear for the male gaze, y’all. This is sumptuous, treat-yourself comfort—the kind you indulge in after an everything shower with a red light mask on your face and a glass of wine in your hand—taken beyond the borders of your bedroom.

I’m seeing these styles paired with cozy oversized knits, loose tees and sporty windbreakers—the key is in the contrast. Sure, it’s kinda giving pajamas, but that just adds to the overall effortlessness of the look. The girls that get it, as they say. Ahead, see the trend in action, and shop some of the signature pieces you need to try it out yourself.

1. Lace-Trim Shorts

Airy and loose-fitting, but still plenty leggy, satin lace-trimmed shorts have been dominating my feed this season. You can dress them up with heels and a blazer, keep them casual with flats and a slouchy T-shirt or give them a sporty twist with sneakers and an athletic jacket. Who knew a pair of shorts we’d normally wear to bed could be so versatile?

2. Lace-Trim Slip Skirts

Wearing a slip as a skirt may have been a wild idea at one point, but now the slinky, silky pieces are basically a spring and summer essential. This year, however, we’re leaning more into their undergarment origins, donning pieces with delicate lace trims much like the shorts above. Minis, midis, maxis, prints—fashionistas aren’t discriminating. Whether worn with a structured jacket, slim cardigan or flowy, tie-front top, the skirt adds a dash of relaxed elegance to any fit.

3. Bloomer Pants

Billowy balloon pants have been majorly picking up this season, as have their romantic, vintage-inspired counterpart: bloomers. Featuring volume through the leg with a cinched, ruffled hem, these bottoms look like they belong beneath a petticoat—but instead are getting styled with T-shirts, tanks and drapey layers. If you’re looking for a unique alternative to those flowy satin or linen pants we’ve been grabbing for warm weather, this throwback silhouette promises a feel that’s just as light and breathable—not to mention straight out of a period piece.
