anthropologie dress store try on CAT

My love affair with Anthropologie has been going strong for more than 15 years now. The retailer’s blend of boho, kitsch and vintage vibes just hits right at the core of my sartorial sensibilities, and it’s often the first place I look if I’m in the mood to shop for something new. That said, there is a lot to comb through at Anthro. The selection of dresses alone is enormous—in all the best ways—with options for work, weddings, weekends and everything in between. So on a recent trip to my local brick-and-mortar Anthro, I decided to document all the dresses I tried on and loved IRL. Here are nine incredibly cute Anthropologie dresses you can shop (and wear) right this very moment.

The Anthropologie Tommie dress has been a major best seller for years now, and after trying on this denim iteration, I completely understand why. The midi length (also available in petite) is both versatile and flattering, and the two-way zipper up the front gives you so much room to play with the fit. The smocked waist gave me a snatched look while still being incredibly comfortable, making me feel like I could still eat a hearty lunch and not feel totally pinched in the middle. The neckline also works well with a regular ‘ole T-shirt bra. Oh, and it has pockets—huzzah!

Another best seller and PureWow editor favorite is the Tobie dress by Exquise. It, too, comes in a whole slew of color and pattern options, including multiple minis. But the version I liked most IRL was this brown-and-white gingham print with subtle sparkly studs throughout. The crystal detailing was surprisingly chic, adding just a touch of texture and pizazz but not so much as to feel overly kitschy or done up. And the fit! The pleated waist was incredibly comfortable and gave me a fabulous hourglass figure, and I adored the shape of the sleeves, which had a more casual draping than your typical shirtdress. The covered buttons also allow you to play with the neckline and slit at the hem. Add to that the fact that this midi comes in petite lengths and has pockets, and you’ve got yourself an undeniable winner.

If I didn’t already own three breezy black summer dresses, I 100 percent would have left the store with this stunning midi. The cotton fabric is soft and lightweight, but also fully lined, which I greatly appreciate. Especially because those gorgeous wide straps go quite low in the back, making it difficult to wear a bra with this dress. But I felt well supported and covered in front, even without the addition of a backless bra or nipple covers. The two tasseled ties in front are adjustable and create a gorgeous corset effect I couldn’t get enough of. Just know, this frock unfortunately does not come in petite lengths or plus sizes.

I saw a gal in my office wearing this dress just last week and was thrilled when she told me it was a recent purchase from Anthro. Trying it for myself, I loved the weight of the fabric—almost like a scuba material—which helps maintain that flared silhouette without being too rigid. I will note, I found the dress to have much more of a tent-like silhouette IRL, both on my colleague and myself, than it appears online. The color is also much deeper and more vibrant in person (the photo I took in store feels like a closer representation than Anthropologie’s pic). The length is fairly short, although it also comes in petite sizes, but didn’t feel outrageous on my 5’9” frame. This is also a fabulous transition piece as we move from summer to fall, looking adorable with some fisherman sandals and colorful statement earrings now, and just as cute layered over a white button-up blouse with knee-high boots come September.

Attention anyone with a larger bust on the hunt for a great everyday dress: this is a fantastic option to try. The smocked waist is super comfortable, and I found there to be ample room in the bust (looking at you, folks with larger cup sizes). The neckline IRL felt more like a true crew neck, whereas online it looks almost like a halter, but in either case the top can definitely work with a regular T-shirt bra. And while the green zebra stripes may not be everyone’s cup of tea, Anthropologie has made this frock in multiple other prints in the past, so fingers crossed there are even more options coming out soon.

Another swingy minidress, this floral frock is a dream for when you want to look put together but it’s also 90 degrees and humid. The cotton material is breathable and light, and the short length provides maximum air flow around the legs. The crisp A-line shape is also oh-so ‘60s, a major trend for 2025. The stand collar was also a chic unexpected touch that gave me Tuckenuck vibes in all the best ways. Like the red mini above, the length of this Maeve number is pretty short, but as a tall gal I’d still feel quite comfortable wearing it with flats or flat sandals. The only flaw I could find with this mini is that it doesn’t have pockets.

This was a surprise hit and the dress I had the hardest time walking away from when leaving the store. A salesperson recommended it as a hot new favorite, but the pleating and volume around the hips made me skeptical that it would work well on anyone with more of a pear figure. Well, reader, I was entirely incorrect. The detailing on the sides gave the dress a gorgeous A-line shape, but with much more of a vintage vibe, and made it look far more expensive than its price tag. And the zip-up front allowed me to get the exact amount of coverage I like up top. Unique, unexpected and easy to wear—this is exactly the kind of pieces I hope to find when shopping at Anthropologie.

Like many millennial women, I will spend all my life hunting for a dress that can make me look and feel like Kate Hudson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Which is exactly why I grabbed this gorgeous draped yellow number immediately upon entering the store. While the neckline is fairly low, the amount of fabric actually made me feel quite confident I could dance the night away in this midi without any accidental nip slips. The horizontal strap across the back is adjustable so you can cinch the waist for a more secure fit, and the leg slit, while certainly sexy, wasn’t so high as to feel truly scandalous. Now if only I had an event to give me an excuse to wear this beauty...

If you find yourself in need of a chic little black dress you can wear all year round to multiple functions, this may just be the piece you’ve been looking for. The shift silhouette may seem rather simple at first glance, but it’s the detailing at the top that really makes this dress feel special. The slight sweetheart neckline with an added mini bow are wonderfully playful, and add more than enough structure to balance the straight, loose cut. The straps are adjustable, and the body is nice and roomy. Dress is up for NYE with some sparkling platforms and a matching clutch, or go for timeless elegance with pearl earrings and pointy black kitten heels.
