I’ve mentioned this before: School drop-off in Brooklyn can be a bit of a scene. It might have something to do with the fact that parents with elementary-aged children in neighborhood schools tend to walk. This means a simple stride to the front gate can feel runway-esque. But it’s also a moment that is chock-full of social interactions and first impressions (yes, even this far into the school year, new introductions abound).

Take a recent drop-off on one of the first days that truly felt like spring: I scouted friends, old and new, wearing gingham, chic trenches, but mainly track pants. (Yes, Brooklyn moms are always on-trend.) It feels more fun to put in a little effort. But also, spring is here—and there’s no better feeling than shedding a bulky puffer coat and lightening your sartorial load.

The below ensembles carry me beyond drop-off, but also to my local coffee shop, the office, heck, even into the classroom to volunteer.

1. For Running Errands Immediately After

When this trend first started bubbling up, it caught me off guard—but I can attest, not only do track pants (like this petite-friendly pair from Athleta) make me feel stylish and put together for drop-off, at this moment, it almost feels like a Brooklyn mom’s spring drop-off uniform. (No joke, I passed seven women wearing them in a single morning this week.) For simplicity, my favorite pairing is a hoodie or sweatshirt—this one from MOTHER is bright and fun—but the track pants really do stand on their own, feeling easy yet surprisingly elevated. Not to mention comfortable, too.

2. For Family Morning in the Classroom

I’m dubbing this ensemble my mom uniform come spring. Mainly because it combines fashion and function, too. The skirt skirt-sweatshirt combo feels stylish and low-key, while the sneakers still feel practical enough to help me handle the mile-walk to school. The best part? This is a look I bet nearly all of us can source straight from our current closet.

3. For Working Remotely at a Coffee Shop

Dopamine dressing, come to life—these bright pink pants coupled with this muted green cardigan, both from Boden, really put a pep in my step. I love the color combo, but also the comfort of this pretty, elevated pairing. (Even better, the pants give structure, but also plenty of give.) As a petite person (my height is 5’2”), a top that has a bit of visual interest is always a win. In this case, it’s the crocheted collar detail of the sweater that feels delicate and surprising, too.

4. For Taking the Subway to the Office

Going to the office always has me combing through my closet with more intention, of course. Still, I always start my day with the trek to school drop-off, so whatever I select needs to feel functional, too. These pants from M.M. LaFleur are a staple, but my favorite detail is that they’re also well-suited to petites. (The inner snaps allow you to adjust the pant hem a couple of inches higher or lower, depending on height—also your choice of shoe.) Another win: At drop-off, we shoo our kids in through the door, then they love to wave to us from the windows dotting the stairs. Tomato red (as in the Larissa sweater) is the perfect stand-out color so that I’m easily spotted in a sea of parents. It also happens to be trending for spring.

5. For When I’m Running Super Behind

Of all the blazers I’ve owned, this Tuckernuck option—dubbed the ‘Diana’—has become my most-relied-on closet staple. Worn over a T-shirt and paired with denim (like this petite-friendly style from J.Crew), it’s the ultimate throw-on-and-go outfit and one that leaves me feeling pulled together with minimal effort. Still, there’s a Brooklyn-specific flourish that’s ideal for when you’re running behind: a Kelly green cap. Mine is one I bought locally from my beloved Italian grocer, Caputo’s, but this style from Clare V. is also worthy (and frequently spotted).

6. For a Leisurely Walk with a Mom Friend

Mustard yellow has to be the most universally flattering hue. I also clearly love a puff sleeve, which is why this Clare V. short-sleeve sweater stood out. It’s pretty and bright, but most important for mom life, a closet workhorse that pairs with lots. (I wore it with denim, but it could just as easily elevate a silk skirt, shorts or a dress.) A drop-off pain point I was eager to solve: Finding a bag that was big enough to carry the essentials—phone, cash, keys—without weighing me down. This option from Polène is perfect.

7. For Channeling That Friday Feeling

The ‘Havana’ dress from Brochu Walker is a style I’ve reached for on repeat and in a variety of hues. It looks crisp and polished with hardly any pressing or steaming required, but it also feels spring-ready and designed with so many thoughtful flourishes (the puff-sleeve, the tiered skirt—the details are what make it sing on any frame). Mainly, I love how airy it light feels, which also happens to be super evocative of the weekend. (Who else is ready? I am.)
