As a Brooklyn-based person, I didn’t think too much of it when I ran into a friend who was repping our local Italian grocer with a cute, Kelly green ball cap. “OMG, I love Caputos,” I remarked, which is when the conversation quickly devolved into a discussion about our favorite filled ravioli type at the Carroll Gardens establishment. (For the record: It’s the arugula and ricotta).

But then I was at a kid’s birthday party and spotted two separate and impeccably dressed moms also wearing Kelly green caps. One was the “oui” style from Clare V and the other, was a less descript, but equally vibrant number sorta like this Polo Ralph Lauren design. Yet again, I clocked the color choice.

What sealed the deal? Passing the Rose Byrne on the street, and noting that she too was rocking a Kelly green ball cap. And thus: Brooklyn’s favorite spring/summer accessory trend was confirmed.

Cute dad cap styles have been trending for a few years now, often dressed up beyond the basic jeans and tee look. In fact, the mom in the Caputo’s cap had paired hers with a luxe, ankle-skimming black belted cashmere coat for a look that was less preppy errands and more polished workwear. In a lot of ways, it’s the new white sneaker, pairing just as easily with denim as it does with a dress.

But what is it about the Kelly green hue specifically? Why is it everywhere in Brooklyn right now? It could just be a summertime thing (green = nature). It also could be tied to what Pinterest calls the “terra futura” trend, a sartorial spin on current efforts to prioritize sustainable living. There have also been plenty of viral Kelly green moments—from the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Superbowl to Liza Colón-Zayas rocking it at the Golden Globes.

Most likely though, it’s something about the color itself, Abby Hepworth, fashion editor for PureWow, explains. “Between Bottega green, Brat green and the general love of green for spring, it’s a color that just makes sense right now. In hat form, it’s a great sporty piece that gives ‘tennis’ or ‘golf’ in all the best ways and somehow feels more luxe than basic white or navy.” (Yes, country club aesthetics are also on the rise.)

Now, for the best part: This trend is affordable. You can snag a Kelly green ballcap for less than $20 (options below) and instantly mix it into your everyday wardrobe. Even if you live 2,000 miles from the BQE.
