Ah, the water table: Are there any other toys that can be both a sanity-saver and headache-inducer for parents? On the one hand, they encourage sensory play and can keep toddlers entertained, screen-free, all afternoon (or, at the very least, longer than three episodes of Bluey). On the other, certain styles can take up half your patio, balcony or living room—and, potentially, leak everywhere.

After hearing countless parents share their love/hate relationship with the outdoor toy, the Happy Kid Awards team took it upon ourselves to test the top-rated designs on the market, from brands big and small, to bring you the four best water tables for toddlers and little kids alike.

How We Tested the Best Water Tables

Over the course of a month, families were instructed to have their kids use the water table at least three times, recording how long they played with it, what held their interest (or didn’t), and what, as parents, they liked and didn’t like. I also asked them to consider the quality and durability of the table, as well as its versatility (could it be used as a sand or sensory table too? Convert to a regular table once they’ve outgrown the water table phase? Packed flat when not in use?). From there, I arrived at the four best of the best.

Most Versatile Water Table

1. KiwiCo Water and Sand Sensory Table

What We Like

  • compact size
  • adjustable height
  • clear panel can be used as drawing board (washable crayons included)
  • pipes/cogs can be moved around

What We Don't Like

  • setup takes some effort
  • somewhat pricey

kiwico

KiwiCo is known for its subscription crates, which offer age-appropriate craft and STEM projects, but their toy line is just as brilliantly engineered. Every detail is considered, and it really shines in this compact-yet-mighty water table. At 22 inches long, it has the smallest footprint of our winners, making it great for apartment dwellers or anyone short on space. But that’s hardly the most impressive feature. It has three height adjustments, growing with your kid (from 32 to 37 inches), and comes with 20 water play pieces, including suction-cup pipe pieces you can rearrange, changing the configuration so kids don’t get bored with the set easily. They attach to a clear panel, and the set comes with washable paint crayons, so kids can draw on the board too.

“All in all, my daughter loves it, and it’s the perfect size,” tester and Gallery Media Group senior director of brand partnerships Carly Janowitz told me, adding that the fact that it’s aesthetically pleasing is a nice bonus for parents. “I LOVE that it’s adjustable as she gets bigger and taller. Right now, it’s on the shortest setting because she’s so young, but we’ll definitely adjust it as she gets older."

Best Wooden Water Table

2. Avenlur Water Table and Sand Table

What We Like

  • sturdy
  • high-quality construction
  • water-resistant coating helps wooden table withstand elements
  • aesthetically pleasing

What We Don't Like

  • seal can leak a bit
  • somewhat pricey

avenlur

One common complaint we heard from parents about water tables? They tend to be big, hulking blocks of plastic. If you’re on the hunt for a wooden model, look no further. Avenlur upgraded its tables in 2024 to a more durable wood and coating, so it can better withstand the elements, and in our testing, it earned high marks for its sturdiness and overall quality of construction. (That said, our tester recommends the optional plastic covering over the basins to extend the table’s lifespan.)

“It's probably more ‘no frills" ’than some of the other options out there, but I like that—it means more room for creativity and imaginative play (and less plastic junk cluttering up my garden),” says PureWow executive editor Alexia Dellner. “It's also not an eyesore! And I like that it's easy to drain, so I don't have to tip the whole thing over (it's heavy!).”

FAST FACTS

  • Material: wood
  • Dimensions: 16” x 32” x 34”

Most Durable Water Table

3. Step2 Rain Showers Water Table

What We Like

  • durable
  • affordable
  • large enough for 4 kids to use at once

What We Don't Like

  • bulky
  • plastic construction

step2

Step2 makes a plethora of water tables, but this one came recommended repeatedly by parents for its durability, range of play options and overall affordability. And indeed, it delivers on all fronts. Our tester owned hers for four years and, while the color has faded from the sun, it’s still in solid condition. Kids aged 2 to 6 loved pouring water into the top tier, watching it “rain” down into the basin below, and it comes with a 13-piece toy set that includes buckets, cups, water wheels, pipes and a rubber duckie.

While this table is the biggest of the bunch, its size makes it great for families with multiple kids or entertaining during playdates, as three to four kids can easily play around it without fighting for space.

FAST FACTS

  • Material: plastic
  • Dimensions: 39” x 24” x 32”

Best Budget-Friendly Water Table

4. Little Tikes Bluey Beach Water Table

What We Like

  • Affordable
  • Easy to assemble
  • Relatively compact size

What We Don't Like

  • Not as sturdy as others tested
  • plastic construction

little tikes

Bluey fans, this one’s for you. Little Tikes has gone viral for its collaboration with the hit kids show, and as much as I love the perpetually sold out Bushland Adventures style, I ultimately awarded the best water table crown to its more affordable—and easier to find—counterpart, shown here. It’s more of a traditional water table, with a lazy river-style design and tiered water wheels, funnels and pipes that kids can pour H2O into as they watch the (included) Blue Heeler family drift down its waterways.

My kids love acting out Bluey scenes and making up stories with the figurines, and I love that when they’re done, all of the pieces can be stored in the center of the table, secured from the elements with an easy-to-pop-on lid. The design is a bit more basic than some other tables, but it still keeps a nearly two-year-old and a six-year-old entertained for over an hour as they make up adventures. And at $60, it’s hard to beat the price.
