I’m always up for a documentary that chronicles a messy trainwreck…literally. ICYMI, Trainwreck: P.I. Moms is the newest hit crime documentary on Netflix, and boy, is it a wild ride.
It all goes back to 2010, when former cop Chris Butler founded a group of amateur private investigators, which he dubbed “ P.I. moms.” These undercover soccer moms tackled all kinds of nefarious activities, including insurance scams and cheating husbands. They attracted media attention in the process, and a reality series about the women was in the works and set to debut in early 2011 on Lifetime Networks.
To make a very long story short, that premiere never happened. An anonymous source tipped off a local journalist that Butler was involved in a multitude of criminal activities that included prostitution rings, drug deals and fake sting operations, amongst many other crimes.
Fast forward a decade and some change later, Butler’s failed series and respective criminal activities are now the subject of a new doc on Netflix that gives some insight into how everything went down behind the scenes. Aside from revealing Butler’s dirty secrets, the documentary also hears from two of Butler’s P.I. Moms, Denise Antoon and Ami Wiltz, to get their side of the story.
