With the Oscars fast approaching, it comes as no surprise that so many people are now streaming the biggest contenders. According to stats released by ReelGood, five Oscar-nominated films were among the most-streamed movies in the U.S. last week. In the third spot was Demi Moore's The Substance, which scored five Oscar nods, including Best Picture. In fourth place, The Wild Robot (up for three awards, including Best Animated Feature). At number five was Jesse Eisenberg's A Real Pain (nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Kieran Culkin), followed by Conclave at number six (nominated for eight awards including Best Picture) and Gladiator II (up for Best Costume Design) at number eight. However, the top-streamed movie was a total surprise.

Securing the top spot was Reese Witherpoon's rom-com, You're Cordially Invited, which dropped on Prime Video on January 30.

The feel-good flick, which surpassed other popular titles like Kinda Pregnant and The Wild Robot, is not an Oscar contender, but it tells the story of Jim (Will Ferrell), a widowed father whose daughter, Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan), gets double-booked at the same island venue as Neve (Meredith Hagner), the sister of TV producer Margot (Witherspoon).

Both parties aren't aware of the double booking until they arrive at the destination on the weekend of both weddings. Worse yet, the space is not big enough to accommodate both events, prompting both the father of the bride and the sister of the other bride to face off as they go to extreme lengths to secure the venue.

Now, personally, I'd say this rom-com is the equivalent of my go-to comfort meal. I know exactly what I'm going to get, because I've seen enough of Ferrell and Witherspoon to know their brand of humor, and I already know exactly how the story will end. But even with a formulaic rom-com plot, I know I'll be satisfied. I know I'll get a few awws and chuckles and cringe-worthy moments here and there. It's a familiar routine that I still welcome—and given that this movie became the top-streamed title in less than a week, it seems like I'm not the only one who feels this way.

The movie was directed, written and produced by Nicholas Stoller (best known for Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Neighbors). Both Witherspoon and Ferrell also served as producers.

Speaking to the film's feel-good tone, Ferrell told Blavity, "It's comfort food in some ways, but there's ingredients that you aren't going to expect to taste...like a little chili paste in there, and tamari. I think Nick Stoler does such a great job of spreading out the tension as long as he can throughout it, which [is] surprising. You think maybe [Jim and Margot are] going to make amends, but no, it doesn't happen."

Witherspoon agreed and chimed in, "It just goes up another level."

You're Cordially Invited is now available to stream on Prime Video.
