I Finally Found the Role Nicole Kidman Wasn't Born to Play—But I Love Watching Her Play it Anyway

I'll still be binging the whole series

I honestly can't believe Nicole Kidman is in another show. Lioness, Nine Perfect Strangers, The Perfect Couple, Big Little Lies...plus all the movies. Seriously, when does the woman sleep?!

Sleep or no, Kidman is back with another thriller show, Scarpetta, based on the book series by Patricia Cornwall. I had a chance to catch the first two episodes over the weekend and I had two major takeaways: 1. The show is really great and certainly worth the watch; 2. Nicole Kidman is totally wrong for the role—and I just don't care.

In Scarpetta, Kidman plays Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta, a woman with a tumultuous past (and, honestly, present), who is out to catch a serial killer.

First of all, the Prime Video series is absolutely star-studded. In addition to Kidman, we get Jamie Lee Curtis (playing her boisterous sister), Simon Baker (as her secret-keeping husband), Bobby Cannavale (as her brash brother-in-law) and Ariana DeBose (as her grieving niece). This means we get A-list stars in nearly every scene we see, making for great TV, despite the missteps in casting.

Kidman is spectacular, but really wrong for the role. Scarpetta is supposed to be a chain-smoking, get-your-hands-dirty kind of gal. Kidman is a rich matriarch (The Perfect Couple) / powerful CEO (Babygirl) kind of woman.

Similarly, Curtis is fully wrong for her role—and, similarly, I love her in it anyway. Curtis's character is a sex-positive free spirit. And while neither Curtis's nor Kidman's roles seem like the right fit, their scenes together—which are really just sisterly screaming matches—are so fun to watch.

The murder mystery thriller hops back and forth through time, following Scarpetta and company trying to crack the same serial killer case. The dueling timelines allow us to get plenty of backstory on the characters, their flaws and their complicated relationships. And we get a whole secondary cast of solid actors, including Jake Cannavale, who plays the younger version of the character portrayed by his real-life dad, Bobby (the resemblance really is uncanny).

In the current day timeline, a new body shows up after decades of no new victims, leaving Scarpetta to wonder if she got the wrong guy all those years ago.

The series is fun, fast-paced and full of twists. I 10/10 would recommend, even if Kidman was never meant for this dark, gritty, serial killer world.

Scarpetta is streaming now on Prime Video.
