I Just Realized Where I Know 'The Girlfriend' Star Olivia Cooke from…and I'm Freaking Out

It's so obvious

As an entertainment editor, I’m always on the lookout for new shows and movies to dive into. Whether it’s a tried-and-true series like The Morning Show (currently airing its juicy fourth season) or a one-off like Unknown Number: The High School Catfish (which, btw, left out one major detail), discovering something fresh is always a thrill. Recently, I stumbled upon Prime Video’s The Girlfriend. While it delivered all the twists of a solid psychological thriller, one thing kept bugging me—I knew I recognized one of the characters.

The familiar face in question? Olivia Cooke. In this series, she plays Cherry Laine, a real estate agent who becomes romantically involved with medical student Daniel, much to the suspicion of his mother, Laura. Cherry comes from a working-class background and puts on a more polished persona to impress Daniel’s family, which raises plenty of questions about what she’s really after.

Cooke, 31, is phenomenal in the role but I couldn’t stop wondering where I’d seen her before. Turns out, the answer is: quite a few places. Most notably, House of the Dragon.

She portrays Alicent Hightower in the Game of Thrones spinoff, appearing in four episodes of season one and the entirety of season two.

But that’s just scratching the surface. The English actress has stacked up an impressive resume. On the TV side, she starred in season one of Apple TV’s Slow Horses as an MI5 agent, brought a love story to life in Modern Love on Prime Video and appeared in all five seasons of Bates Motel from 2013 to 2017.

As for films, she played a lead role in the 2018 sci-fi action flick Ready Player One (which earned her multiple award nominations), starred opposite Anya Taylor-Joy in Thoroughbreds and led the horror film Ouija.

And she’s not slowing down anytime soon. With the much-anticipated season three of House of the Dragon on the horizon and a few other projects listed on her IMDb, it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot more of Olivia Cooke in the near future.
