‘The Morning Show’ Season 4 Review: Jen and Reese Are Fabulous, But Those 2 Greta Lee Twists Steal the Show

My spoiler-free review of the season premiere

It’s been nearly two years for Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston), who is now helping to run things at the newly minted UBN, and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon), who is licking her wounds as a professor in West Virginia. And yet, it’s like no time at all has passed for these Morning Show characters. They are still as fierce, feisty and ready to bring the drama as ever.

The Morning Show season four premieres today on Apple TV+—and believe me when I say things start with a bang. Levy gets herself into hot water immediately (and sparks a car chase) after an interview with an Iranian Olympian goes awry. The only solution to Levy stepping in it once again? Another reshuffle of UBN hosts that means the return of…wait for it…Bradley Jackson (duh).

The season four premiere is quite good, delivering everything I could hope for: solid answers after the chaotic conclusion to season three, the return of our favorites (and the departure of our villains—buh-bye, Jon Hamm), totally expected screaming matches between Alex and Bradley over wine and, most importantly, twists.

First of all, the performances of our lead actresses are as phenomenal as ever—I’d say even more so than in previous seasons. Aniston and Witherspoon seem fully settled into their characters in a much more comfortable (and dare I say believable?) way. Karen Pittman (who left And Just Like That due to schedule conflicts with TMS) continues to crush it as Mia Jordan, now running things at TMS but struggling to become head of the news division. Marion Cotillard is as fabulous as you’d expect as the newest exec at UBN. But, y’all, we need to talk about Greta Lee.

It goes without saying that Lee delivers a standout performance once again. Her character, Stella, has now reached the pinnacle as she is running UBN. This means the stakes are high—and any scandals caused by her employees (Levy, Jackson, etc.) will land right in her lap. And while I’m fully engrossed in every scene Lee appears in, I was most caught off guard—and excited—by her twists in the season four premiere.

Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but Lee’s storyline gets super interesting in episode one. While out at a bar sipping a martini, the powerhouse executive is sent a drink by a dashing man sitting across from her. She plays hard to get, but they eventually go home together. That’s when we get twist number one (and it’s a fun one, implying we’re about to learn a lot more about Stella’s personal life). But then, just a handful of scenes later, we get an even bigger Stella twist, and now I’m seriously worried for our girl…

The Morning Show season four is off to a great start. Longtime fans of the series are sure to be happy with the direction things are going, especially with the teased coverup, the mysterious messages being sent to Bradley and, of course, the Stella twists.

Here’s to another exciting and drama-filled season. New The Morning Show episodes drop weekly on Apple TV+.
