Calling all Hunger Games fans: The first official trailer for the prequel movie, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, has finally been released—and it’s definitely something fans of the film franchise (and book series) don’t want to miss.

The trailer starts by taking us back into the early days of Panem, well before the days of Katniss Everdeen. Audiences have a chance to see Viola Davis, 57, channeling her character, Dr. Volumnia Gaul, for the very first time and she is dressed from head to toe in true Panem fashion.

“I am honored to introduce the creator of The Hunger Games themselves, Casca Highbottom,” she says to a group of chosen tributes.

In the two-minute trailer, we meet other central characters in the story, including a young Coriolanus Snow (played by Tom Blyth), a chosen tribute named Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), Tigris Snow (Hunter Schafer) and the mind behind the Hunger Games AKA Casca Highbottom (Peter Dinklage).

Based on the novel written by Suzanne Collins, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes follows a much younger Coriolanus Snow, years before he becomes the President of Panem. Back in June 2022, the first official teaser for the prequel was released.

Mark your calendars, Hunger Games fans: The prequel Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set to hit theaters everywhere on November 17, 2023.
