Episode two covers Berkowitz’s evolution into his “Son of Sam” persona and the different tactics he would use to toy with the media, and the third and final episode details the intense search to capture Berkowitz, as the public’s fear had intensified.
Per the synopsis, the series mixes present-day interviews with previously unreleased recordings, as details are still being revealed about Berkowitz and his crimes nearly 50 years later. This includes a 1980 interview with crime reporter Jack Jones, where he sat down with Berkowitz at Attica Correctional Facility. While Rotten Tomatoes reviewers haven’t gotten a hold of this documentary yet, some critics have, and the reviews are interesting, with the Wall Street Journal calling it “fascinating nonsense.”
The comments underneath the YouTube trailer also indicate excitement, with Netflix fans writing, "I remember this case in NY. My older sister was terrified to go out," and "Netflix has the best true crime documentaries. Need more, I've watched them all."
That’s a good enough description for me to put on my streaming list this weekend, and I can’t wait to give it a watch (even if it means nightmares afterwards).
You can stream Conversations With a Killer: The Son of Sam Tapes on Netflix now.
