This New Prime Video Series Is One of the Funniest Shows I've Seen in Ages

The surprise hit of the month

I know the term is "Netflix and chill," but this month, I've been all about "Prime Video and chill." It doesn't quite have the same ring to it, but Prime Video has seriously surprised me with hit after hit after hit.

Consider the offerings: I love Scarpetta, starring Nicole Kidman; Jury Duty season two is just as funny as season one; and Young Sherlock is my new favorite show. So, color me shocked to find another must-watch option on Prime Video this month: Bait starring Riz Ahmed. Here, my honest review (and why you need to add Bait to your streaming queue).

In this clever new comedy, the former The Night Of star plays Shah, a flailing actor up for the role of the new James Bond. After blowing the audition, he finds that he might not be out of the running just yet. He'll do whatever it takes (intentionally or accidentally) to make his dream come true.

You'll likely recognize the creator, producer, writer and star of the show, Ahmed. He became the first Muslim actor ever nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, for his role in 2020's Sound of Metal. His HBO thriller The Night Of was a huge hit in 2016 (if you haven't seen, add it to your list as well).

Now, he leads the charge in Bait—and he's absolutely funny and fabulous. He brings serious acting chops to the role, and it's impossible to take your eyes off of him. (Just wait for the early scene of Shah talking to himself in the mirror after his botched audition—gold!)

Guz Khan co-stars as his sidekick slash relative who will do anything to help Shah achieve his dreams (even if his uber-casual manner doesn't quite fit in with the world of the Hollywood elite). Together, Khan and Ahmed bring the laughs with a modern odd couple dynamic.

Most importantly, Bait is highly bingable. The episodes are a breezy 30-ish minutes, and I immediately dove into episode two after the first one finished.

Will this hot mess of an actor actually become the next James Bond? I'll be binging the rest to find out.

Bait is now available to stream on Prime Video.
