But maybe this new guard of tomato scents is more refined. I recently went to a press event for Bath & Body Works, where they announced Off The Vine, an entire collection inspired by the fruit. I prepared for it not to work, but I was wrong. It smelled amazing. It gave me less pizza parlor and more walking through a fresh garden in the middle of July. It completely transported me to my grandparents’ old home, where they had a baby plant that sprouted the smallest tomatoes known to man (but my grandfather was proud as was I).
Brands like B&BW are ready to change people’s minds, opening the door for tomato haters to consider taking a second whiff of the unique scent. “Tomatoes are a universally familiar scent—almost everyone has experienced them in some form, so the fragrance feels instantly recognizable and comforting. Our brains are naturally drawn to scents we can identify, and tomato offers a unique balance: it’s fresh and green, yet also fruity and subtly floral,” explained Karine Chevalier, a Carrière Frères perfumer and fragrance expert. “Because it’s both approachable and surprisingly complex, I believe the tomato trend has real staying power. Much like fig once evolved from a niche note to a fragrance staple, tomato could follow the same path and become a modern classic in perfumery.”
As a result, some editors (myself included) are starting to sway their initial thoughts about the rising fragrance like Fashion Editor Abby Hepworth, “I've been on the hunt for the perfect tomato candle and would 100 percent wear it as a perfume, too. But also it needs to be fresh on the vibe tomato, not Nonna's sauce tomato.” Well thankfully, I found eight perfumes and candles that may turn you into a tomato convert. Here’s to living your best Tomato Girl Summer.
