I was on team Shape Tape for years. The Tarte concealer is touted as the best in the beauty business by everyone from makeup artists to novice beauty influencers, and for good reason. The coverage is impeccable, it doesn’t crease and it lasts as long as you need it to. I would have happily used it into my eighties…until I checked the toxicity of my makeup bag on the Think Dirty app and realized the ingredients weren’t what I expected.

For some reason, I had assumed that Shape Tape was “clean,” but Think Dirty pointed out that the phenoxyethanol, hydroxycitronellal, fragrance and peg-10 dimethicone in Tarte’s concealer aren’t totally kosher. It comes in at an eight out of ten on the dirty scale (which is based off carcinogenicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity, allergenicity and immunotoxicity). TLDR: The ingredients in Shape Tape could potentially have negative long-term health effects.

Thus began my search for a clean beauty option that worked just as well. Luckily, I didn’t have to search far. While interviewing actress and clean beauty advocate Julianne Hough about her partnership with Roven, she mentioned that she loves RMS un cover-up. A friend who works in beauty development had also suggested it to me. So, I Amazon Primed it and guess what? I love it.

Unlike my former favorite concealer, the un cover-up is comprised of things like beeswax, rosemary extract, coconut oil and castor seed oil (aka things I can actually pronounce). Accordingly, it comes in at a three on Think Dirty’s scale. Did I mention it’s also GMO-free, gluten-free, soy-free and cruelty-free?

Although RMS’s un cover-up doesn’t offer the same mega opaque coverage as Shape Tape, it builds to create just the right amount of, well, cover up. RMS suggests using your finger to apply, but I’ve found a foundation brush is useful if I need more heavy coverage. I also use it as a lightweight foundation when I’m doing a full face of makeup. It’s lightweight, hydrating and formulated to enhance the look and feel of your under-eye skin. Thanks to the mineral pigments used, it also self-adjusts to your exact skin tone (it comes in 14 shades) so it doesn’t even look like you have concealer on.

All in all, it’s quickly become my favorite undereye concealer. The fact that it’s clean is just a bonus.
