I remember when Patrick Ta Beauty came on the scene and dazzled us with his Crème & Powder Blush Duo. The celebrity makeup artist has since expanded to eyeshadows, bronzers and highlighters. But in August 2024, he released his now beloved Major Skin Hydra-Luxe Luminous Skin Perfecting Foundation, and it still has a chokehold on the beauty community. As someone who has tried hundreds of foundations (it comes with the job description), I thought it was time to finally try the viral product that’s all over my feed. I also roped in five other PureWow editors and Gallery Media Group staffers to see how well it worked on different skin types and tones. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Patrick Ta Foundation?

Known as the Major Skin Hydra-Luxe Luminous Skin Perfecting Foundation, it promises buildable coverage, a boost of hydration and a smooth, radiant finish. It’s formulated with three forms of hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate the skin, along with plant-derived squalane to improve elasticity and minimize the appearance of fine lines. You’ll also find hints of kombucha for radiance and smoothness. It’s made to be great for all skin types and has an extensive shade range with 30 options to choose from.

How to Use Patrick Ta Foundation

The brand recommends shaking the bottle before applying one to two pumps on the back of your hand and using a foundation brush (or beauty sponge) to gently pat it on the skin. They suggest starting at the center of the face and moving outwards along the jawline, neck and hairline.

How We Tested the Patrick Ta Foundation

I made a call for testers to try out the Patrick Ta Foundation, and found five testers that range in different skin tones, skin types and locations. From there, we each tested the foundation and answered a series of questions: Does it offer buildable coverage? Does it leave a radiant, natural or matte finish? Does the formula work best for dry, oily or combination skin? We also analyzed how it complemented our complexion, how well it worked with our other makeup products (like primer, blush, etc) and how it held up after wearing it for hours. Keep reading to see if the foundation lives up to the hype, including photos of the testers before and after wearing the foundation.

Our Review of Patrick Ta Foundation

The Shade Range Is Spot On

Patrick Ta

Each tester tried two shades—the product is available in 30 shades, and there’s even shade finder online, which offered some of us the perfect match. “I was very nervous that the product wouldn't match my complexion because it looked so light. I chose my color using the shade finder on the website, so I thought their tool wasn't going to be accurate, but my fears quickly disappeared because once I started blending it in, it was a perfect match. I could have also gotten away with going a shade or two darker and it still would have matched well,” shared Senior Manager of Business Operations Sara Baksh.

It’s Easy to Blend Out

Patrick Ta

The foundation blended seamlessly on the skin and truly got the job done. It worked best with either a foundation brush or beauty sponge and layered well with other makeup products (i.e, concealer, bronzer, blush, setting powder, etc). “The foundation worked really well with my other products. It wasn't difficult to blend and the foundation spread easily. I noticed my skin looked dewy, hydrated, and smooth, but still skin-like almost instantly,” Editorial Assistant Courtney Mason told me.

It’s Pretty Lightweight and Buildable

Patrick Ta

We all agreed that the foundation was super lightweight. As mentioned, it’s formulated with hyaluronic acid and squalane, so it’s meant to be hydrating and breathable on the skin. “I'm not usually a foundation fan. My day-to-day routine usually includes tinted sunscreen and a swipe of clear brow gel, but even after multiple hours of wear, this foundation didn't feel like a true foundation (you know—heavy, cakey, constricting or oily),” shared Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay.

It sounds like a gem for dry skin, but does it work on oily or combination skin? It depends. Mason discovered it didn’t irritate her eczema patches or enhance her oily T-zone, while Morales noticed it clung to a couple of dry patches around her chin and acne. As a combo girl, I would say it’s an adjustment to do a dewy glow when you already deal with oily areas. However, I would recommend doing an extensive skincare routine and using a gripping primer that works best for your skin type.

The Coverage Is Phenomenal

Patrick Ta

The buildable coverage gets high praise from us as it often felt like we weren’t wearing anything at all. It has a serum-like texture that stands apart from other foundations in the market. “I love how soft the foundation feels on my skin. I don't like when foundation (or any makeup) feels thick on my face, so this one felt like skincare. I forgot multiple times that I had it on,” shared Morales.

The coverage also delivers in any weather—whether you’re in cloudy NYC or sunny Florida. Baksh shared, “I loved that I didn't really need too much prep other than the standard face moisturizer for this product to give me a luminous glow and last through the day (especially a day that required me sitting poolside under the sun!) I was experiencing a slight breakout paired with dull skin during the time I tested this, so I was extremely grateful that this product was able to fix both issues with only one layer of product!”

The Wear Is Even More Impressive

Patrick Ta

It’s truly long-lasting and maintains the dewy look at night—so no budging or slipping here. “This is a great foundation. After a few hours, the product still looked *and* felt great on my skin. With other luminous foundations, I find they can look greasy on the skin after a few hours. That didn't happen here, and my face had a natural glow instead,” expressed Mason.

Associate Director of Account Management Jazmine Clarke told me she already has swapped this in as her main foundation, sharing, “The foundation still looked really good even after a few hours (no creasing or patchiness). It wears beautifully, feels comfortable and delivers a natural, polished finish that lasts.”

The Bottom Line: The Patrick Ta Foundation Is a Winner

What We Like

  • buildable coverage
  • lightweight formuula
  • impressive staying power
  • great for all skin types

What We Don't Like

  • pricey

Patrick Ta

We scored this foundation 95 out of 100. With 30 shades, matching our individual complexions was easy. The formula also played well with our skin types, ranging from dry to combination skin. As a foundation that markets for all, it truly delivered for ALL. “I really loved this foundation and I have been using it everyday. It didn’t feel dry at all, which is a big win. I wouldn’t say it’s super hydrating, but the finish was so nice and comfortable that I didn’t mind,” expressed Clarke. For Yohay, she doesn’t normally go for dewy finishes, but appreciated how hydrating it was for her dry skin. “This foundation is officially changing my stance on dewy finishes—it was lovely post-application and after multiple hours of wear!”

When it comes to the oily/combo club, it boils down to a good skincare routine, a gripping primer  (like Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Hydrating Primer or e.l.f. Cosmetics Power Grip Primer) and a setting spray/powder (like Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray or Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder) that reduces excess oil. Overall, the foundation delivered on coverage, finish and comfortability. It is a pricey foundation, coming at $58, but all of us think it’s worth it.
