Thinning hair isn’t fun—and it can also be worrisome. Luckily, there are tons of hair supplements on the market, promising everything from faster growth to stronger strands and more shine. But do any of them hold up? As someone with fine and thin hair, I was curious. So, I asked a handful of dermatologists and trichologists to tell me about the hair growth supplements they recommend and how they work. They also gave advice on how to shop—from ingredients that work wonders to the sneaky ones you should avoid. Below are their six recommendations. The best hair of your life is in your future.

Haircare company Vegamour is a PureWow editor favorite, from the brand’s HYDR-8 line to the scalp massager. Former PureWow Commerce Editor Olivia Dubyak also tested the GROBiotin gummies and writes: “My hair grows painfully slow, and recently I’ve been struggling with breakage and dullness, too. After the first 30 days of taking the gummies, I began to see subtle changes in my hair, from faster growth to a shinier, healthier appearance overall. Midway through my trial period I went to visit my parents in Pennsylvania. Upon seeing me, my mom, who is a hairdresser, noted how much thicker and glossier my hair looked. Bolstered by her comments, I religiously took one gummy per day as directed for eight weeks and saw incredible results at the end. I gained about three inches total, which is amazing compared to the measly half-inch I would normally grow in a month.”

As it turns out, Vegamour also comes expert-recommended, with Dr. Kobets telling me, “I tend to position this for patients who are more interested in a holistic or wellness-driven approach, particularly when there are underlying concerns around inflammation, stress or metabolic health contributing to hair changes. It also pairs well with their topical system: botanically based shampoos, conditioners and serums, if someone prefers a more lifestyle-integrated approach.” The supplements offer DHT support and adaptogens, plus a probiotic component.

Another hair supplement Dr. Kobets recommends is Nutrafol. Of the three recommendations she gave me, she calls Nutrafol “the most comprehensive, multi-pathway option.” She chooses this for patients whose symptoms overlap between androgenetic alopecia and stress-related shedding.

“It combines DHT modulation (saw palmetto), stress regulation (ashwagandha), anti-inflammatory support (curcumin and vitamin E), structural components (collagen and amino acids) and key micronutrients, which is why it tends to perform well clinically,” she explains. “It’s addressing multiple pathways simultaneously rather than relying on a single ingredient. I also like that they now offer a vegan, biotin-free formulation, which is helpful for patients who want to avoid animal-derived collagen or minimize lab interference from high-dose biotin, since earlier formulations contained very high daily values. They also have a thoughtful postpartum option.” Nutrafol offers two formulations for women, one for those aged 18 to 44 and those 45+, as well as a men’s capsule.

For those experiencing hair loss due to nutritional gaps, stress and GLP-1-related weight loss, Dr. Batra recommends Keranique’s hair and scalp supplement. The star player in the soft gels is the brand’s KeraViatin10 Complex, which Dr. Batra notes contains clinically studied ingredients to promote healthy follicle function and strong hair shafts. The Complex contains Vitamin B, Omega 3 and 6 oils, saw palmetto extract, biotin, zinc and selenium.

If your focus is keratin production and hair strength, Dr. Kobets recommends Viviscal’s hair growth supplement. Whereas Vegamour’s focus is more holistic and Nutrafol’s will best address severe hair loss, Viviscal’s is best described as a structural and nutritional support supplement that promotes existing hair growth, deriving its benefits from a particular ingredient. In this case, it’s their AminoMar Collagen Complex.

“[It] provides amino acids and collagen peptides to support keratin production and improve hair strength and quality,” Dr. Kobets explains. “I think of this as supporting the hair fiber itself, helping it grow stronger and more resilient rather than significantly altering hormonal or inflammatory pathways. It’s also typically more affordable, which makes it a practical option for long-term use. The main limitation is that it’s fish-derived, so it’s not appropriate for patients with fish or shellfish allergies.”

Have a guy in your life who’s searching for hair growth supplements? Dr. Batra recommends BosleyMD’s men’s supplement, explaining that it works best for those with early signs of hair thinning.

“The formula includes DHT-blocking botanicals like saw palmetto and pumpkin seed extract, along with nutrients like biotin, niacin, and zinc,” she says. “These ingredients work together to support stronger strands, reduce shedding and promote fuller-looking hair over time.”

One of the buzziest wellness ingredients over the last five years has inarguably been NAD+. The supplement originally appeared as an IV in med spas, where the Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide was infused directly into your veins. Per reporting by former PureWow Senior Editor Dana Dickey, NAD+ is a molecular compound key to the body’s ability to create energy, protect itself from stress and prevent aging-related decay. Now, it’s found abundantly in oral form, including hair growth supplements like Xtressé.

Dr. Kindred is a fan of the molecule and recommends Xtressé’s hair growth gummies. “These help cells repair themselves, promote the activation of stem cells in the hair follicle, and improve overall hair quality,” she says. Other key ingredients include pumpkin seed extract (antioxidant and essential fatty acids that block DHT and inflammation), taurine (beta-amino acid that protects hair follicles) and saw palmetto (may reduce DHT).

There are dozens of options when it comes to hair growth supplements. Here are three things to keep in mind as you shop.

  • Be wary of supplements that rely heavily on biotin as the sole ingredient. Per Dr. Kindred, biotin doesn’t contribute to hair growth and can distort your bloodwork results. (Though it does contribute to keratin production.) You can address hair loss/thinning due to inflammation with antioxidants like turmeric, pumpkin seed extract and taurine. If your hair loss is hormonal, Dr. Kindred says ingredients like saw palmetto and horsetail extract are helpful. If you struggle with stunted hair growth, she explains that pea sprout extract can help extend the growing phase.
  • Nutrient deficiencies can contribute to hair loss and slow growth. That’s why vitamins and minerals like iron, Vitamin D and zinc can be helpful. Alturaif explains that women with low iron levels may experience disruptions in their hair cycles, which can lead to excessive shedding. She adds that Vitamin D has a key role in follicle cycling, and low levels can often be linked to hair thinning. Zinc doesn’t directly contribute to hair growth, but it does support scalp health and oil regulation. If you think you are nutrient deficient, consult with your medical provider first.
  • The delivery system makes a difference. “While appealing, gummies often contain added sugars and lower concentrations of active ingredients,” Alturaif says. “Capsules or tablets tend to offer more reliable dosing.”
  • Avoid over-supplementation. Alturaif cautions that more is not always better, especially with biotin and zinc. Excessive doses can actually worsen hair concerns and disrupt other health systems.
  • Understand the root cause. No pun intended. But as Alturaif and Dr. Kobets stress, hair loss isn’t a one-size-fits all issue, and causes vary from person to person. It can mean hormonal imbalance, stress, postpartum changes and/or genetic factors that may require more holistic treatment than just a supplement.

  • Dr. Kseniya Kobets is a Board-Certified Dermatologist and the Director of Cosmetic Dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care. Dr. Kobets received her medical degree from the Yale University School of Medicine and completed her residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
  • Dr. R. Sonia Batra, M.D., A.B., M.P.H is a Keranique Brand Ambassador, Harvard University graduate and Rhodes Scholar with expertise in dermatology and dermatologic surgery. Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Best Hair Growth Supplement?

There are many growth supplements to choose from, and they often feature different ingredients or focus on a certain part of the hair growth cycle. The dermatologists and trichologist I consulted for this article recommend avoiding hair growth supplements that rely on megadoses of biotin, as it doesn’t contribute directly to hair growth. Some brands the experts recommend are Vegamour, Nutrafol and Viviscal.

Do Hair Growth Supplements Really Work?

In PureWow editors’ experience trying various hair growth supplements, yes, they do work. Former PureWow Commerce Editor Olivia Dubyak, for example, noticed that her hair grew three times as quickly (0.5 inches/month to 1.5 inches/month) after regularly taking a hair growth supplement. Keep in mind you’ll have to take them consistently to see any benefits.
