Film Fans Are Furious Over This Classic Movie Remake...And We Kinda Get it

Seeing Dorothy click those red heels and skip down the yellow brick road in The Wizard of Oz practically defined our childhood. And now, thanks to New Line Cinema, fans can expect to see a new adaptation of the classic.

Nicole Kassell, who has worked on projects like The Americans and Watchmen, will be directing a remake of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for New Line Productions. In a statement, she said, “While the 1939 musical is part of my DNA, I am exhilarated and humbled by the responsibility of re-imagining such a legendary tale. The opportunity to examine the original themes—the quest for courage, love, wisdom and home—feels more timely and urgent than ever.”

She continued, “These are profoundly iconic shoes to fill, and I am eager to dance alongside these heroes of my childhood as we pave a newly minted yellow brick road!”

Isaac Klausner will be executive producing the movie while Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill will serve as producers. The upcoming film will also join countless other remakes of the classic story, which include The Wiz, The Wonderful Land of Oz, Return to Oz and the famous Broadway musical, Wicked. However, one look at social media will tell you that most fans are not thrilled to see another remake—and we kinda get it.

One fan wrote, "I have no desire to see a Wizard of Oz remake. I’ve seen the 1939 version at least fifty times...I’m good." Another fan tweeted, "While i admire the gumption of someone trying to remake a near-flawless classic i can't see why, as a filmmaker, you'd want to. Wizard Of Oz remains, in its original form, one of the most magical big screen experiences." Solid point.

One person also added, "No. The movie is perfect. A remake will not even touch the original. It may look slicker/polished, but it won't feel authentic. There are so many OZ books, you'd think they could adapt one of them and create something new."

Considering the impact of the 1939 adaptation (and the fact that Judy Garland's performance is matchless), we can totally understand these reactions. Still, a tiny part of us remains hopeful that this remake will exceed everyone's expectations.
