See the Royal Family’s Balcony Photo at 2023 Trooping the Colour

The British royal family just gathered for a picture-perfect moment.

Today, the royal fam stepped out for the annual Trooping the Colour celebration in London. Following the parade, they returned to Buckingham Palace and appeared on the balcony for their iconic family photo.

Royal family members included King Charles, 74, and his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, 75, along with Prince William, 40, and Kate Middleton, 41. The Prince and Princess of Wales were joined by their three children: Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5. Meanwhile, King Charles's younger sister, Princess Anne, 72, was present, as well as his younger brother, Prince Edward, 59, who was joined by his wife, Sophie, 58.

This isn’t the first time the royal family has gathered on the Buckingham Palace balcony for a photo. In fact, it’s become somewhat of a tradition for the fam. (See below for last year’s picture with the late Queen Elizabeth.)

Trooping the Colour served as King Charles’s second birthday celebration. If you’re confused, you’re not alone. Although he was born on November 14, the monarch also has a celebratory birthday in June (aka Trooping the Colour).

The British monarchy established the holiday in 1748 as a result of King George II. The patriarch’s birthday just so happened to fall in November (like King Charles), and if you’ve ever visited England during that time, you probably know that the weather is unpredictable.

According to CNN, King George II created the Trooping the Colour celebration, so he could have a second, grander birthday party in the summer. It originated as a standalone event but has since transformed into a full-day affair that Britain and the entire Commonwealth can enjoy.

Back in May, the royal family posed for a similar balcony photo at Buckingham Palace for King Charles’s coronation. The picture was taken immediately after the crowning of the new monarch and his wife.

What a meaningful family memory.
