The 9 Best Moments from King Charles's Coronation

In 1953, over 20 million people watched as Queen Elizabeth II was crowned Britain's new monarch in the most elaborate ceremony. And now, nearly seven decades later, her son, King Charles III, has officially been sworn in as the new ruler, alongside Queen Camilla.

1. The Royal Family's Balcony Appearance—Sans Prince Harry

Following the crowning of King Charles and Queen Camilla, members of the royal family appeared on the balcony at Buckingham Palace. The Duke of Sussex was noticeably absent, but this is likely because he needed to return home to celebrate his son Archie's birthday.

2. Prince George Making History

The 9-year-old royal served as a Page of Honour, which makes him the youngest future king to ever have a role in the ceremony. Prince George totally nailed his role as he walked directly behind his grandfather and helped carry the tail of his robe.

3. Prince William's Sweet Tribute to His Father

Prince William, who's next in the line of succession, kneeled before his father and made a vow, saying, "I, William, Prince of Wales, pledge my loyalty to you and faith and truth I will bear unto you, as your liege man of life and limb. So help me God."

The two also shared a sweet father-son moment, when Prince William gave his father a kiss on the cheek.

Millions of fans saw history in the making as the Archbishop of Canterbury placed the St. Edwards Crown (which, FYI, is 400 years old) on King Charles’s head, making him the official King of the United Kingdom.

5. And the Crowning of Queen Camilla

The royal was anointed by the archbishop and crowned with Queen Mary’s Crown, which marked the first time a new crown was not designed for a queen consort. After this, the choir performed "Make a Joyful Noise.”

6. Prince Louis Stealing the Show

We can always count on Prince Louis to steal the show with his meme-worthy facial expressions. Per the New York Times, he was “spirited away before the end of the ceremony” for a temporary break. And upon his return, fans were treated to even more of his scene-stealing expressions.

For the occasion, the Princess of Wales wore a white Alexander McQueen dress and a matching floral headpiece, along with red, blue and white robes to pay tribute to the British flag.
