Over 50,000 Letters of Condolence Were Sent to the Royal Family Following Queen Elizabeth’s Passing

The royal family must certainly be feeling the love.

After Queen Elizabeth passed away at the age of 96 on September 8, the royal family offered a space for followers to send a message of condolence, with a note on their official Instagram that said, “For the latest guidance on Mourning and how to sign our online book of condolence, please visit our website.”

However, royal followers also sent physical cards and letters to the family, and it turns out they really added up. In a new Instagram post, Buckingham Palace reported that the family received over 50,000 letters of condolence.

“Over 50,000 letters and cards have been sent to The King, The Queen Consort and Members of The Royal Family following the death of Queen Elizabeth,” the caption said. “A small but dedicated Correspondence Team are carefully sorting, reading and responding to the messages as they arrive.”

Royal fans showed their awe in the caption, like one user who said, “Oh wow this is amazing.” Another wrote, “Thank you for all your work!!!”

A similar process occurred when Queen Elizabeth's husband, Prince Philip, passed away the year prior. However, the link for the virtual book of condolences is no longer available on the royal family website.

Following the monarch's passing, the family went into a period of mourning, which lasted until September 27. King Charles III shared a statement to Instagram, where he said, “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

During a trip to Windsor Guildhall to thank workers who helped during Queen Elizabeth's state funeral service, Prince William expressed how much the public's support has helped the family.

According to Good Morning America, the royal “reportedly told attendees that he still gets caught by moments of sadness following his grandmother's death, but [he] said the outpouring of support from the public has buoyed the royal family amid their grief.”
